I’ve got a few small Texas Ebony logs that were left with me when I did a mill job. They’re 6-8" diameter, 18-24" long. I know that’s not very big and on the edge of usable, but thought I’d offer them up since it’s a nice looking but fairly uncommon wood (around here) and I’d hate to se them go into the firewood pile.
I’ll be cross-posting this onto some other platforms if I don’t get any response here in the next couple hours.
@sasha was kind enough to come to my house and deliver a log of the Texas Ebony. She lives pretty close to me so it was a lot more convenient for both of us to exchange it this way. I gave her some beautiful veneers in exchange so it worked out nicely.
For those woodworkers amongst you I wanted to show you what the grain of the log she gave me looks like. It is simply gorgeous. I plan to make a few small items like pens, yoyos and possibly a small bowl from it.
The ends had been sealed with some kind of latex probably so it is in great shape.
Thank you Sasha for stopping by with the wood. I enjoyed very much getting to meet you.
Thanks @coloneldan it was great talking with you today and learning so much from you. Can’t wait to see what you create. I’m already brainstorming project ideas for the beautiful veneers too. And a big thanks to @Lloyd_Plum for the Texas Ebony logs!
Yesterday I cut up some of the Texas Ebony log. I wanted to create some pen and bowl blanks from it.
When I cut into it, the pith/heartwood was rotted somewhat. It was either caused by bugs or weathering, but it was not useable to turn. In addition, there were some bad cracks in the wood resulting from shrinkage even though the ends of the log were obviously covered in latex or wood sealant.
The mosture content of this particular pen blank is about 14%. The ziploc bag I put all of the blanks in had moisture in it overnight. The wood is probably wetter than 14% in places. I think it would be fine after a little oven time, but I’m going to air dry them a little bit before turning them or storing them.
The wood, however, is very tight grained, very much figured and very dense. I had to proceed very slowly on the band saw even though the blade was relatively new. (Good practice regardless)
I know I’m super late to the game on this one, but if you have any left I’d be happy to come by and take what you’re willing to allow and isn’t already tagged for someone else. Just shoot me a message and I can make a time work to come pick it up that fits with your schedule.
Edit: I’m a dummy and didn’t see the “Gone” part of the title of the post. I’m just an idiot that doesn’t read things fully before jumping into action. Apologies.
