Hello everyone,
I have a half inch piece of glass i need to cut and i am not sure which department might have tool to do this. I have a 3in handheld glass cutter, but its not doing the job. Any advice or direction would be helpful, thanks
Daniel
1/2 thick? Wow. I haven’t had to work with that thickness. The score-and-snap method isn’t working on that?
Do you have running pliers?
I will confess that my knowledge of the tool names is a bit… lacking. However, Glassworks probably does, and I probably know exactly which ones they are.
When I teach the cutting for the microwaving, I tell people that I don’t know the right name for the pliers, but you line them up with your score line and press down. And voila! the glass snaps. Works very well on the 1/4" glass we’re using.
Running pliers:
As for half inch, I have zero experience cutting anything that thick. My only advice is how confident that it isn’t tempered or laminated? Either one of those won’t cut, and the tempered will shatter if you really try to cut it.
That thick, my suggestion would be sign up for the next GlassWorks Equipment class. The Taurus Ring Saw should be able to do the job. Unfortunately the saw is down and classes are on hold until Chuck B can repair it. He has been very sick and will be by when he has recovered. The Taurus has a round blade that can cut in all directions.
Yes! We have several pairs of those. However, see Anita’s note above…
that was very interesting. cutting 19mm (3/4") was impressive.
Thanks for the redirect
I would love to take a class for the glass cutting tools, but i dont think i have seen one. I remember looking for them when i saw the stain glass project. When are the glass work meetings?
A class was suppose to happen yesterday but was canceled. As soon as the equipment is fixed, I’ll get another class up. I hate to spend 400.00 to get a new saw when I feel Chuck May find it’s something simple.
I hope to get a team for repairs in place sometime in the future so I’m not totally dependent on Chuck. I can change belts and blades and that is as much as I am mechanically inclined.
Get well soon, Chuck. @dr_cee
