Just found a Fusion 360 Add-in called OpenBOM that will generate a multi-level BOM, including part dimensions. I’m using this for a woodworking project and the multi-level BOM can be used for an automated cut list. This is so awesome I had to share. My project has about 100 discrete part numbers and I was not looking forward to manually creating the cut list.
It’s far more capable than the way I plan to use it.
Free. Easy to use. What more could you ask?!
After it was installed, it was generated with just a couple clicks.
It can also be exported to Excel or pdf with just a couple more clicks.
Here’s a tutorial if you want to see more.
DETAILS:
OpenBOM free account
- Go to the OpenBOM website.
- Request a free license. If you’re not doing commercial work they’ll give you a free license.
- You will get a response almost immediately. It will look like it has been approved but it hasn’t been. The message is confusing.
Download/Install the App
- Go to the Autodesk App Store.
- Sign in with your Fusion 360 log-in.
- Search for Open BOM (for Fusion 360)
- Download
- Install
Update the App
- Update
- Start Fusion 360
- Go to Tools / Add-ins
- Select Open BOM (It probably runs automatically when F360 starts.)
You should see the Open BOM icons.
- At the far RH side of the icons, there will likely be an update icon with a small red dot (mine doesn’t show because I’ve already updated). Click this.
- Close and restart Fusion 360.
Sign-in and Run
- Sign-in and Run
- Open your design file.
- Go to Tools/Add-ins. Select what you want to do (Multi-level BOM, for instance).
- It will ask you to log in. Use the login you created when you registered for the OpenBOM account.
- Now pay attention to this … It looks like it’s going to generate your BOM but it will probably come up with an error message telling you that you need a subscription. This is because your free license hasn’t actually been approved yet.
- You need to apply for the GET TRIAL license while you wait for your free account to be approved.
