Hit a random estate sale and found a couple of nuggets…. Not sure how useful a #5 plane is but it’s in great shape. Should restore beautifully.
That’s gotta be the ad Connie was talking about in The Grapes of Wrath. “Just send in the coupon and you’re a radio expert. Nice clean work.”
Looks like Mr. Tesla in the pic (for the millennials, I don’t mean Elon Musk).
Looks more like Agent Coulson to me.
Pretty useful, actually. AKA “jack” plane, because “jack of all trades”. Probably the most common plane to be found in a handy man’s (yeah…I said it) tool box in days of yore, as it sits in size between a smoother and a jointer. Back in the day if you had a door that was sticking then…jack plane to the rescue! (nowadays you just buy a new house).
I was expecting to find a Charles Atlas ad in there but nope, it’s all technical with no ads.
Thanks Marshall!
I have a few boxes of old and antique tools that a local customer asked me to pick up due to them downsizing and her husband hearing that I am a tool junkie…
The old planes that I will never use, bits and braces, and a lesson on “monkey wrenches” when I picked them up…
Good times.
This is for you “plane” folks:
Does anyone happen to know what this one was intended for?
It is just one of the misc older tools I was given recently.
Taking a SWAG based on the flexible -adjustable base, for planing the inside curve of say a barrel or other curved service.
Are you sure it doesn’t have a BMW or Porsche marking on it - some weird specialized dealer only tool to adjust the windshield washer nozzle?
Just wait for the next repair video I post in automotive !
Thanks for reminding me! - I’ll have to switch to my phone for that …
I could see that being a coopers plane. Not that I’m right.
Found several others like it,
Stanley No. 20 Transitional Jointer plane Also called a compass plane
Stanley offered several models of the circular plane. They all have a flexible sole that allows for convex or concave work. These days most users seem to prefer the 20 model because of its design. (large adjuster wheel can be fixed to your preferred settings)
Appears to have been used in boat making (ribs)

Thanks for that rabbit hole to tumble down.
