Is that the I don’t want to sell it price, or is there an extra zero in there? If the Toyota fans really are fanatical, I could see maybe half of asking if it really is as nice as the photos make it appear, but given the seat covers it clearly needs an upholstery job. But even a similarly aged ranger, I think I routinely see listed for 1/4 of this asking price or less.
Toytos really hold onto their value way too well for how meh they are, but they don’t hang on that well. Maybe half that much.
That’s the well maintained classic truck that I’m already talking to 3 interested buyers about price.
I sold a banged up 1990 similarly equipped with hail damage and 180K miles for $5K some years back. Maybe in 2009? At the time the prices were going up and up. Overall I came out $2K ahead. I should’ve kept it longer! For some reason people really want these trucks. They’re good trucks but they’re not that good.
probably because of the 25 year thing? and nostalgia?
I think nostalgia. It’s the truck I always wanted when I was a kid. I got it exactly like how I dreamt. Color and all. I guess it’s a good thing I got it out of my system early enough when they were cheaper.
Yup. Had a 510 Coupe that I let go a couple of years ago in a needs TLC condition that someone else wanted more
I just liked it because it was a milestone model for Datsun.
Re Toyota truck. Maybe it’s the next classic Landcruiser.
While OP’s truck is in much better shape, this Yota is more than 4 times cheaper:

Even that price seems high to me, but as long as Toyota guys buy their own hype enough to pay those prices, they’ll stay away from Jeeps, Nissans, and Isuzus, so those will stay cheap. And I’m okay with that.
Did you just say Jeeps are cheap?
Considering you can pick up a YJ or a TJ for a lot less than 12k, not to mention XJs, ZJs, WJs, and at this point even WKs and some JKs even, I’m gonna go with “relatively speaking”.
Jeeps are, at the very least, cheaper than Toytos. I couldn’t, for the life of me, tell you why FJ80s command 10-15k pricetags when they’re no more capable or comfortable than ZJs that max out in mint condition in the 5k range- more often in the 2k range for a perfectly acceptable example. But obviously, the demand is there for atoyots at that price, so there must be a strong enough cult following that those guys won’t spend their ridiculous sums of toy-buying money jacking up prices for the cheap stuff I like.
There’s a world wide demand for the 80 series Landcruisers with many owners spending much, much more than the acquisition cost to restore/customize the vehicles. Numerous Japanese models fall into this category. The non-US market 98-00 RHD Civic Type R, the S13-15 Nissan Silvia, the 40, 60. 70, 75 & 80 series Landcruiser, the AE86 Corolla GT-S are some examples. Is it hype? Sometimes, but part of the hype is that to someone, somewhere, some time, the cars were aspirational objects for those that sought them.
They’re the non-US Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes, GTOs. Syclones, Typhoons of the auto world.
P.S. IIRC, you can still buy the 70 series Landcruiser new in Dubai.
Someone flagged this for removal.
