Front door... why?

We have RFID tags for members, we have the door bell for non members. Why did someone think this was appropriate?

It has been removed and a sign posted.

Because that doorbell doesn’t get answered. I know this because I spend many a Saturday morning in its proximity.

I forgot my fob one Saturday, because it was attached to my truck keys and I was in my wife’s car, and rung the bell. @StanSimmons answered the bell pretty promptly and I was most thankful. Furthermore, he assisted me getting a new FOB so I wouldn’t be without one while at DMS for my marquetry class. Thanks again Stan!

Both FedEx, Amazon, and other delivery services use that door bell. If nobody answers the door, then nothing gets delivered to DMS.

We found a bent piece of metal propping it open last night as well

Then your one of the people that need to respond to the doorbell

That responsibility typically lies with whomever is inviting non-members to the Space - and thus should facilitate attendance at their event - as opposed to interrupting random members that happen to be doing things nearby.

Stan is no longer nearby because of complaints and cannot make it in until later some days. We need someone avaliable to help people and to answer the phone and door. Like it or not the role Stan plays is vital.

So how does one “in the proximity” determining if its a non member coming for a class, a fed ex delivery, a non member coming for a tour, a member with his hands full,or just someone passing by who needs to be let in to learn about Makerspace?

Its anyone in the “proximity’s” responsibility to answer the door otherwise you are ignoring potential members.

Teachers of a class for non member need to be aware and make arrangements for the door but to ignore it is NOT excellent!

A package was lost for the space from USPS because of this a week ago

Not that this affects me, but what’s not excellent is being the poor schmuck trying to get some work done in 3D Fab and having to answer the door for anyone and everyone.

@michaelb … I’m confused now. You laugh at a post about having an admin role at the space and then thumbs up a post about normal members not having to answer the door. Do you just not want DMS to receive packages or what?

Man, you figured me out from the type of smiley face I leave on other people’s posts. Bravo.

Clearly you’re presenting your question to try and paint me in a bad light and obviously that’s not conducive to a meaningful discussion. I’m out.

I’m not actually … i would like to have a discussion about the admin volunteer position, which I think we need. I think if you have valid points, you could really contribute to the discussion. I was just asking you if you had some because you voiced some emojis and I wanted to see if you had something more to say.

One thing we should consider is putting the timer in on these doors like we have on the other door.

There is a timer by the 104 server room that will unlock the old front door for a certain amount of time. This is to be used by instructors to allow people in the building. However, you still have to get them to sign the waiver.

If a class is being taught that includes non-members it is up to that instructor to let people in. We have a meeting every Saturday morning and would never get anything done if we had to getup and answer the door every five minutes for a hour to let people in for the acting class. They come and go every ten minutes.

BTW, I’m the one that answers the Voicemails that come to the DMS phone.

Logistics is working on a storage space for UPS/Fedex to leave packages.

If your sitting in the current 3d fab and you hear a knock at the old front door you have a choice, answer it or ignore it, if you answer it good for you, if you ignore it we all know what kind of person you are plain and simple. That’s all I have to say.

Then a user should expect no backlash or punishment if something goes wrong with the printers while they answer the door. Rules are, you babysit the print until it’s done.

Maybe we need to put an alarmed crash bar on that door with a sign directing folks to the other door.

Well Raymond if you actually were aware of the rules in 3d fab you would know this is not the case.Members Do not have to stay in 3d fab and babysit their prints.
