Friendly Reminder To All Machine Shop Users

I’m guilty. The class ended and they didn’t know where these went. I was finished putting the car back together on the lift while they were practicing. Around 3:00 AM and did a test drive - made it to RR tracks, Tom towed car back and away from DMS.

I came back through front door around 3:30AM and my other car was out front, I was in a real F’ it mood, not an excuse. It’s all on me - name the penance? How about I not teach for six-months till I learn my lesson (after tomorrow’s morning class).

I now know where my glasses and tumbler are. Is my hat there?

Seems like more classes on the required stuff is more helpful than less.

Damn, thought I’d sneak that by.

I vote you have to teach a welding class. I’ve got so many people hounding me about it at the moment.

You took your hat with you (on your head), at least out of machine shop.

I’ll start practicing my TIG so I can. In the mean time I can shcedle some classes on the Shear-Brake-Slip Roller.

That’s all I needed to hear.

What class are you going to teach next to make up for this infraction?

We will have the next machine shop committee meeting the following Sunday at 5.

We will also use it as an opportunity for procurement and overall maintenance and organization of the machine shop. (That Pentagraph will be chopped up used for cast iron tig practice and dumped.)

That was’t the table I was talking about. That looks like someone was trying to organized the sherline stuff. It’s the blue table by the old lathe and Bridgeport that has just miscellaneous stuff on it.

I hope you’re joking about not teaching. Now I feel bad. You’re one of the very few teaching classes and you donate so much of your time. “Oops, mea culpa” is good enough for me!

Glad you found your glasses and tumbler. But sorry … I didn’t see your hat.

this has always been a problem where the shop egress is blocked. if it can’t be resolved by either moving it yourself or by sending a note to infrastructure - call the fire marshal. maybe getting DMS shut down for a while will result in heavy penalties for those who do it. when it comes to fire exits I don’t play. Been in two building where real fires have started.

For my edification, should this be @Team_Infrastructure, or is it @Team_Logistics? The Logistics wiki page says they are responsible for enforcing storage rules/areas and also for general safety.

You call the Fire Marshal directly, without authorization from the BoD, and you will not like the result. See Rules and Policies - Dallas Makerspace section 5.

If anyone does it (calls the FM) and shuts down the space for any amount of time, I will personally make sure that everyone knows exactly who did it.

If something is blocking egress, move the something, then come see me. I’ll pull camera footage and get the situation resolved without putting DMS in jeopardy.

…or perhaps some medical photos of incidents incurred via gloves in rotating machinery.

Logistics is correct. However we rely on Stan for ass kicking.

When I come in from the back I am usually headed to JSM with heavy tote
bag with metal and stones in it, I like to use the path along the back of machine
shop to avoid having the long walk around the entire workshop ( at one time one could
cut thru the table work area most of the time-mot now for me when carrying a heavy
load)

First issue is often getting past the loading dock, then I sometimes need to wait for someone
using a tool The passage is then passable

In case of an emergency in the workshop, that is quickest way out if you are in Fired Arts or JSM

I am concerned about an evac in the dark back there

Section 5 seems to refer to contacting public officials on behalf of DMS. I don’t like the implication that someone acting on their own behalf as a concerned citizen could be persecuted by DMS membership because they contacted authorities regarding a really serious safety issue, and that exposing that person to public scorn could be justified by twisting that rule.

If it’s a big enough problem that the FM could shut us down, then stricter enforcement of policies preventing FM-related issues really needs to be a thing. I’m with Nick on this one, which is unusual for me- I’d rather see DMS leadership take the fire safety issues seriously and create and enforce effective policies regarding it, than have someone get hurt in the event we do have a fire. If it takes the fire marshal shutting DMS down for that to happen, then I have absolutely no confidence in the board or any of the committee chairs. There’s no reason to let it get bad enough that the fire marshal shuts us down.
