Free wood in the work table area - what type?

There is a fairly sizable pile of free hardwood lumber in the work table area. Anyone have any idea on what type of wood it is?

I believe it is mostly oak. Though I have milled some and am unsure what type of oak. It is a darker deeper reddish color then any oak I have worked with before.

I don’t know if this is the same oak that @jeffbob provided but I believe it was white oak. It was used in the construction of mobile homes as I recall and he bought a large quantity of it and donated some to DMS. It was I believe stored outside at one time and so it weathered.

I’ve milled some of it, too. It has a beautiful grain and looks very nice when sanded and stained. Some of it is especially nicely figured. You will have to use the joiner and planer to see the actual grain. Some of that that I selected looked like this:

Yes, I believe @jeffbob is the person who donated this lumber as well. I too was told it was white oak, but the piece I milled on Sunday doesn’t look like any white oak I have seen before. It is much tighter grained then the oak I have seen, and has a noticeable red sheen to it. I also noticed some other woods (notably a pine 2x4 with nails) in the pile so exercise caution before using the wood on the jointer and planer.

red oak?

Don’t know. Seems heavier then any I have worked with. Nice wood, but just not sure what it is. Not even sure that it all (or even most) is the same type of wood.

How hard is it? I’m in the process of making a good mallet for chiseling. Think it would be a good candidate?

Some of it yes, others not so much. Look for a good heavy piece with no cracks and you should be good to go.

Sure looks like Red Oak. That pile will disappear fast, and it’s great wood once jointed. Some bigger projects possible with it.

Just FYI, be aware some of the free wood that has come to the space is infested with powder post beetles.
