Foundry Classes for 2016

Hello everyone,

I have been working at a foundry in downtown Grapevine for the last year and have learned quite a bit.

Been playing around with 3D printing for lost wax cast with both ABS, trying PLA now, and have just ordered some wax filament for the PrinterBot Printer (can’t wait till it gets here to try it out!)

I 3d printed a few belt buckles in ABS and ran through the casting process, they turned out pretty well!

Considering putting together classes partially at DMS and @ the foundry in grapevine (very safe environment for metal pouring - grid floor with sand!)

Here is the plan:

Starting in Feb - 3 1hr-ish classes every other month for 40$ (to cover materials) on a Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon Limit 8-10 people

Week 1.@DMS Intro – History, process, Idea generation, provide a small block of wax for homework to make something or 3D print in wax, or if you have something you already want to cast (small fist size or not much bigger will need to make silicone mold and wax of it) This could complement the rubber mold making class…

Week 2.@Foundry Prep - Attach wax gate/spruces to wax molds, 1st slip and coat for sand investment and cover foundry safety for following week.

Week 3.@Foundry Cast - in Bronze or Aluminum, break mold, cut spruce and clean (Sand Blast or grind) piece, possibly patina?

Please let me know what you think or if you would be interested in joining the class so I can gauge the interest.

Thanks,

Matt

That sounds like a fun set of classes. I’m interested.

Sounds very interesting. I may have to take this class.

I’d have some interest in this.

I’m interested, I’m pretty familiar with the process though.

Sincerely,
Tim Nielsen

Sounds like a lot of fun. Sunday AM is bad for me though.

I’m very interested in classes like this.

Am also interested.

18 19 20 characters.

I am interested. Feb 3 is a Wednesday which I can do… Sunday am works for me Saturday am would be more difficult.

Not sure if I can attend, but would like to log my interest anyway.

I three am interested in this class

Looks like there is enough interest to put this class on the Calendar for a first round!
I spoke to Nathan (Foundry Chair) last night and he gave me pointers on posting, so I plan on posting it next few weeks during the holidays.

I will shoot for Feb 6, 13, 20 @2-3?

Tickets will be required, payment due 1st class.

I would be interested in knowing what types of things people are planning to cast and which material they will cast (Bronze or Aluminum)?

Will let everyone know how the Wax filament and PLA work out once I cast them.

Thanks everyone for the interest!

Great idea Matt! Add me to the “interested” list.

Hi Matthew,
I offer the rubber mold classes and am VERY interested in metal casting as well!
I want to learn about preparing wax in the molds for lost wax and investment.

Great class idea. I think I saw the website for the Foundry in Grapevine.

Val

In. Please add me to your list, would love to participate in this.
