Fly SpaceX...to the Moon...in 2018

@publius… I have no doubt that you have already heard about this! :full_moon_with_face:

An ambitious plan that’s not terribly likely to happen given the present state of Falcon Heavy and Dragon 2 capsule development.

What present state is that? The first falcon heavy launch is only ~6 months away*. (assuming this launch date sticks and doesn’t slide like it has for the past couple of years)

Falcon Heavy has missed a number of milestones. I gather the Dragon 2 is in the same boat.

What an amazing thing to be happening in our lifetime!

I wonder who has the stones enough to plunk down that serious money for a ride on an unproven rocket!

That’s some crazy stuff there.

I dreamed as a kid about going into space and wish I had the money for it, but would rather go up in a Soviet or European rocket that has a better chance of a successful launch.

Musk has said he’ll do it… it will get done. Having said that… if he says 2018, it might be 2019 or 2020 before he gets it done. He’s got a horrible track record on setting timelines and keeping to them. All in all… exciting times.

Some of us are old enough that Moon Trek: The Original Series was the biggest thing. We are encouraged that Moon Trek: The Next Generation may finally be about to happen.

I am reasonably confident that this is a re-bid of the Space Adventures lunar flyby mission which has been on the books for years. That is supposed to use some Russian hardware which so far is making a lot less progress toward validation than anything SpaceX is doing.
