Fixing messed up knife handle

Years ago I “made” my dad a knife (just fabricated the handle from stabilized burl scales).

Despite my warnings, he ran it through the dishwasher regularly and managed to trash the handle. It seems securely attached (no movement at all) but is cracked in a few places. The wood also seems to have shrunk slightly and is no longer flush with the edges of the tang.

When he passed away a couple of years ago I inherited the knife back and would like to rehab the handle rather than replacing it.

I’m looking for suggestions on how I might fix this. Epoxy and CA glue come to mind. Any others? I’d like to stabilize the cracks and ideally buff or sand it back to a nice shine.

Thanks!

Sand, collect the dust, and mix dust with epoxy to fill crack.

Alternatively celebrate the crack and tint the resin something like blue or brass and fill with that.

Afterwards sand and polish as normal.

Sorry for your loss. Hope the knife sticks around for many years.
