Hi all. Glassworks would like a fire cabinet to store a bigger propane bottle for lampworking. The old jewelry fire cabinet over in the corner of the flex area(near project storage) is the perfect size. Can we trade the one currently in jewelry for that one? Or the one in metal shop?. We also have that huge one by the auction area. I think we should actually utilize these great resources instead of storing junk in them. Several members of woodshop are currently “squatting” in the old jewelry one. I would recommend giving them a smaller one for paint/solvents. @Team_Jewelry @Team_Glass @rlisbona @jphelps @Vincent @Team_Woodshop
Are fire cabinets intended for flammable gas storage? If the bottle isn’t shut off properly you could still leak gas.
Maybe we should have another outdoor cage closer to ceramics.
We are currently using them for gas storage and solvents. Albeit little disposable bottles. Either way, my point still stands about underutilized resources.
Can we have a separate cabinet for Jewelry and Glass? Not obvious that storing solvents and gas bottles together is a good idea …
You are correct Randy. After some reading. They are for liquid flammable storage. That said we should still horse trade them between committees so that they get used efficiently. Auto/metal should have one for solvents/brake cleaners. Powdercoating should have one shared with woodshop for solvents, stains…ect(I propose the big one). We have that one in metal shop but I think we could utilize it better. I also have no idea why it’s locked. Also not sure if CA or 3d Fab use solvents but I would bet so. Jewelry has one small cabinet, not sure if they use solvents or other flammable liquids. I think science has their own somewhere
3D fab does not currently have one, but is looking at getting one due to their solvents /cleaners.
A fair few of the fire cabinets have locks because they are not intended for regular members to store hazardous materials at, only for committee use/classes. (At least from what I’ve heard in the past)
You have just proven my point.
I think we have all the fire cabinets we need. I just think they are underutilized. Why buy another one when we have four (one used for member storage)(one was full of acetone and underused because it was always locked)(a big one that is full of junk)(one that is being used improperly afaik)
How do we resolve this? Do we discuss it at a board meeting? Or between chairs?
Um, jewelry has butane and propane / MAPP gas cylinders stored in ours, that we use for soldering and annealing. While we might be able to use a slightly smaller one, i don’t think it can be a lot smaller…
You should have a small cage for those not a liquid flammables cabinet. Based on what I have read about proper usage of fire cabinets, you shouldn’t store compressed gas in them
I’d think fire cabinets is a committee level item normally. If needed, procure and trading between them would be OK
However I would suggest you see if @Julie-Harris and @Vincent what to do something else.
There was a recall on small propane bottles that leak a few years ago. I had one. If we are storing these in the building we should get some brass caps as an extra safety measure. I agree with Max that the big fire cabinet by blacksmithing could be relocated.
Actually, i think we currently have several small (creme brulee type) butane torches and one MAPP gas cylinder used for annealing. When i need propane torches for a class, i bring mine and take them back home with me.
The cabinet in the flex area labeled jewelry only has a bunch of those propane bottles. At the very least we should swap those two cabinets and put gas in one and solvent in the other one… we shouldn’t have both in one cabinet.
