Expansion Update #4

Hello Makers,

Expansion has had a productive week. Here is where we are at the moment.

  1. We have installed all of the RFID locks
  2. The door has been cut between the two spaces. Don’t try to go through it, until we have the CO no one who isn’t on the expansion crew is allowed to go through, and if you are on the crew your key will work so still use the regular door. No joke, use an existing door.
  3. All of the electrical has been mapped
  4. We have developed a list of committees that will be able to move when we get our CO
  5. The alarmed push bars have been installed.

Here is what we have for this week going forward

  1. We are getting a plumber out for an estimate on Monday. This is necessary to get our building permit.
  2. We are getting an estimate for installation of the fire annunciators in the 102 side of the building. This is also necessary for our permit.
  3. We are going to run the low voltage wiring for the cameras.
  4. Drywall and ceiling repair around the new 3D fab area.

Here are the groups that will get to move once we have completed Phase 1:
3D Fab - moving to 102 temporary location while we work on expanded electric
Science
Vector
Printmaking
Glass - Can’t run the big kilns until the ventilation is in place but everything else will be good to go
Electronics
Common room
Digital media - into the old electronics room, the sound booth will not be ready but you do get the extra space
Creative Arts - into the old common room

This will open up space for the Classroom Committee as well, they will get:
The old 3d fab room
The old creative arts room - becomes a dividable classroom
A large room in the front area of the new side of the building
A wet classroom area on the new side of the building - this is where the galley was supposed to move, but we don’t have enough power for the equipment there yet.

Needless to say moving all those groups will be a lot of work so I will be setting up a coordination meeting to develop a plan on how and when to move each group.

The meeting will be this week, however, we can’t yet give a target date for the moves because it is dependent on both getting the building permit and passing the inspection for the Certificate of Occupancy. When we get the permit we will be able to set some target dates.

I also want to give a special thanks to everyone who volunteered this past week. With your help we got a ton done and are a lot closer to moving into the space. Thank you for your awesome effort, you all rock!

Thanks, the expansion team.

Congratulations on the progress.
What kind of update is there for those of us NOT moving? Will we be allowed to stretch out a bit temporarily into the areas that are left vacant? Will we have to worry about others ‘squatting’ in our respective areas in 102? Are our areas being moved around from the original plan? Rumor has it the plastics area is being moved and will not be adjacent to the machine shop. I say it is a rumor because no one has talked to us officially. I don’t agree to that BTW. The point is that communication is key as you know, otherwise rumor and decent continues.

Keep in mind that all Committee areas are approved by the Board of Directors. In one month we will have a new Board. Will areas change? I do not have an answer for that.

The only area change I know of is that Vector and Science decided to swap areas based on Electrical power outlets in their respective areas.

Squatters will be dealt with on a case by case basis. If the expansion team puts construction material or other stuff in “your space” temporarily, it isn’t squatting.

I suspect that vacated areas will be used for worktables and storage for the short term, and when the time comes will be cleared for construction. This is not set in stone and will likely be decided by the BoD and Logistics.

There may be some tweaks, but they will be hashed out with the effected committees before they are finalized. There was some discussion about moving plastics away from machine shop and moving the sink to where plastics was. This was dropped after there were objections when it was being informally discussed.

I fully agree. It’s the entitled people and rogue committees that are more likely to try to use it for storage.

Fyi: im pulling the Ethernet for 6 or 7 cameras and should be complete in a few hours.

Update: 10 wires done in 3 pulls. 1 pull of 2 wires remaining. 3 wires need wall fish and boxes installed. All need termination.

Great news on the progress for expansion. Looking forward to move day.

Basically everyone in Vector will not be available for any in-person meetings starting Wednesday this coming week. I am reachable by phone and can likely take a break and find a quiet place to join the meeting.

Vector will be tied up with the Texas Pinball Festival in Frisco. The show is from Friday through Sunday but prepping, moving and setup begins Wednesday.

thanks @mrjimmy thats great news. i feel bad that i haven’t had time to help at all. Full time job (50-60 hrs) and finishing my senior year of Mech Eng. leaves very little time for either my family and/or DMS.

RIFD locks work but last night someone locked the door so I had to go get the hard key. I know those who have keys are used to locking up but now we have the rifd installed. Please don’t lock the door

Actually that’s for the fire inspector. Apparently we jumped the gun on the push bars, they can’t go in until we have the permit so we had to temporarily go back to the key locks.

That said, I just got off the phone with the fire alarm company who the landlord uses, we are one step closer to the permit so we should be able to turn them back on soon.

Back to the key locks again.

Yes, that is correct. According to the Fire Marshall that I talked to, Suite 102 must be under lock and key until we get the Certificate of Occupancy. We cannot use the keypad nor the emergency exit push bars until we pass our inspections.
