Expansion Update - 03/25/2020

Even though the Dallas Makerspace is currently shut down, our Expansion Effort is still underway. Electricians are on site and they are working in the Warehouse area.

Electricity in the building was shut down for awhile as the Electricians worked on the main circuit breaker panel. The large box in the middle of this picture (see above photo) is the 1,600 Amp main panel for the 102 side of DMS. The new 400 Amp panel to the right will feed the Machine Shop, Blacksmith, and the 480 Volt transformer for the Welding area. The panels behind the step ladder are still to be replaced with new 400 Amp panels for all the building’s rooftop air conditions and the Automotive area. All of the major wiring has been installed in the conduits just waiting to be terminated.

In this photo (see above) the new 400 Amp breaker panel for Fired Arts, Jewelry, and Glassmaking has been installed. Two large conduits were installed overhead that go back to the main panel.

These panels (see above photo) are located in the corner by the new Machine Shop area. A new 200 Amp panel has been installed for the Machine Shop equipment.

The Electricians have at least one month’s of work ahead of them. We are having about 75 electrical outlets scattered around that still need to be installed.

Engineering drawings are still being processed for the ventilation systems for all the Kilns and Blacksmith operations. Also, Engineering drawings are still being processed for the 22 foot tall walls around Blacksmith, a wall for Digital Media, a wall for the new hallway through part of the the Pillar Classroom, and several door modifications. All of these drawings are required for our City Building Permits.

These expansion projects are sort of like a duck in the water, it appears that the duck is moving slowing but he is paddling like hell under the water. I have assured the Board of Directors that all of the Expansion work will be done properly and to all building codes.

At the board meeting we approved the allocation for the riggers to move machine shop. So as soon as the electricians are done Machine Shop can hire their riggers for the move.

Hello Mr. Meyer,

Thanks for all your hard work and attention to detail.

Also thanks for your reply on the PCB question.
Just got a set of boards from an outfit called OshPark.
They did a great job. Three boards for twenty bucks.
Still working with PIR sensors (motion detectors)
going to an IC, 555 timer, going to LEDs. Doing
a system that will light up a staircase as the user walks
up the stairs.

Will do a video when done.

Hope everyone at your house is healthy and happy.

Awesome work, Rich!

New Dallas County rules say that elective additions are not allowed. Does that affect us?

We are still commercial. Very broad stokes for sure.

@richmeyer this article lists some new required precautions. Can you verify they are being followed just to be on the safe side?

@mrjimmy I have not been at DMS for several days now so I cannot verify what protocol the electricians are using. At the most only 3 electricians were on site at the same time, most of the time only 2, they are keeping their distance from each other. DMS has provided hand sanitizers and other supplies as required by the Judge. I am not forcing them to work at DMS, it is their decision to do so. They were not there yesterday (Tuesday) but today they were. Will keep monitoring the situation from home via the DMS security cameras.

Thanks, as long as we control our contact with them and stay safe. They seem to have a good process in place for keeping themselves safe.
