Expansion construction

Hello, Makers
We have approved a bid for the next phase of expansion. This includes the following:

  1. Walls around blacksmithing
  2. Ventilation for blacksmithing and ceramics
  3. Moving the door to the bathroom in the wet classroom to face the flex area
  4. Enclosing the water heater so we can install the wet classroom sink
  5. Installation of the mini split for the server rooms

We will need volunteers for a work day to clear the blacksmithing area to allow the crew room to work.

If you would like to help with getting the space ready for the construction please contact Briana Bailey at [email protected]

Once we have a start date we will set up the work day for the move.

Thanks, James

Seriously??? :astonished: This isn’t an early April Fools joke that you’re just posting 4 days early, correct? Just need to make sure because we’ve been waiting literally forever for the ceramics ventilation. :joy:

What’s the ETA for the work being done now that things are moving forward?

@Synth83 look what’s finally happening! :heart_eyes:

So is the electrical going to be done for blacksmithing as well? Not sure what all their power requirements were but I do know they needed 3 phase for the induction forge at a bare minimum.

Electrical is included, but just like last time we are saving money by building out our own drops from the overhead boxes.

What’s the status of the wall cut between the Metal Shop and the Machine Shop? I’d imagine that would make the blacksmithing move easier as well.

This includes walls for the Electrical Rm along w/ controlled access?
Future home for the Amateur Radio SIG?

Is enclosing the water heater some kind of code thing?

Thanks

That’s next phase, can’t cut the hole until we can move the felder.

Yes and yes!

Enclosing the water heater is not a code issue, more of getting it out of sight since this will be a classroom, plus having a small utility closet.

There is some gray duct tape on the concrete floor where the walls will be installed. Look close since the tape is about the same color as the concrete. This tape should be an indicator of the area to be cleared. Also leave another 8 feet on the outside as a work area. Contractors will need room to maneuver a man-lift to access the 22 foot tall walls.

@mrjimmy, just a reminder to contact the Fire Alarm folks to add/relocate sensors and strobe lights in the Blacksmith and Electrical rooms.

One of the questions from the Machine Shop meeting we had today was what precautions are being taken that the construction dusts don’t end up airborne and damage our sensitive surfaces in the Machine Shop? Abrasive powders like those found in sheet rock would wreak havoc on most of our machines.

Would it be possible to have isolation barriers put up around the work to keep the dust down?

We will definitely ask. We will make sure machine shop is involved in the project planning meetings.

As soon as we have a date I’m sure all of the blacksmithing group will be there to volunteer. Sooner the better it’s been a long wait.

If it’s on a Sunday I can usually lend a hand.

Thanks, I’ll pass this along. Believe it or not we found a builder who has past makerspace and highschool science lab experience. We really feel like they will be a great long term partner.

We’ve put out a call for this Saturday for general volunteers.

I’d like to have someone from blacksmithing around to help coordinate so that we don’t accidentally move stuff in a way that makes it hard for people to take stuff out and work with it before construction is finished.

I’ll be there

We are working with the builder to get the remaining plans for automotive, woodshop, and laser completed and approved by the city and the landlord.

That will be the final phase of physical construction for the space.
