Engraving acrylic

I’m interested in making some edge illuminated glowing signs. Do we have a tool that can do that at the space ? I know the Haas and the CNC Router probably could, but note that I want to use acrylic. Acrylic seems to be problematic on both of those tools, so I’m looking for alternatives.

I would think the laser is probably the most appropriate tool for this. I believe that is what was used for the ‘on air’ sign for digital media.

Hmmm. I wasn’t sure the laser could cut only part way through acrylic. I’ve always wanted clean cuts before, so I never explored that. An “On Air” sign for my ham station is exactly what I have in mind BTW. I hadn’t noticed the one for digital media. I’ll have to read up on that. Thanks !

That’s exactly what we do in laser, the new one can do varied depth on your lettering as well.

I say that but dont totally know how to use the feature.

The sign for the media room was made by @markbolla - did a really good job on it… I would be interested in a class or quick run down on how he did it…

Thanks for the compliment. I confess that I haven’t been to Makerspace in a long while since I moved to Anna. I own my own Universal Laser VLS6.60 and use it in my business. I make those signs commercially, mostly 7" size for awards, etc. I have gone through at least a dozen iterations of designs for edge lit acrylic signs and keep improving the looks and the techniques. I would be happy to share what I have learned as far as what to do and what NOT to do.

Would you be willing to teach a class? The honorarium might lessen the pain of driving from Anna.
