Elementary Presentation day

I’ve just thought of an idea that I think fits into “PR +Science” best, but could really expand out.

Every year in elementary school, I had to do a ‘science’ project. Cardboard stand-up display, charts, graphs, baking-soda-and-vinegar volcano type stuff.

A quick google search tells me that there are 18 elementary schools within 5 miles of the MS. I’m sure that they have some promising students, whose hard work gets displayed for an afternoon in the school gym and then unceremoniously dumped.

It would in my mind be a good idea and fun thing to ask the teachers to recommend a small selection of students from their schools (2 each?) to participate in a Makerspace Kids science fair. The hard work has already been put in, and the recognition could go a long way toward pushing a student into great things.

We set up the interactive with tables, which could probably hold 20-30 or so displays, and ask each of them to prepare a 5-minute presentation on their subject to be displayed (might be tough to move them in and out though) in the lecture hall. It’d make for a full Saturday of activities for sure.

This could also work well for Art classes, or High School shop classes (if those still exist) as well.

I’m in, I already do science demonstrations of High Voltage, Cryogenics, Squishy & Paper Circuits.

Just did Paper Circuits for Valley Ridge Elementary 4th Graders in Lewisville on Monday. Do 5th Grade next week.

@lampy also volunteered to dazzle kids during a STEM camp I run during the summer. Hero.

I’ll make a moderately notable donation to dms if you choose my sons elementary school. Ya, it’s a bribe.

I would love to get involved with this but at the same time I need to be aware of my time restrictions. Let me know if this is a go.

I think this would great. Getting young kids interested in Making and Doing.

While we don’t have “kid makers” we can develop future minds and parents that need a place that supports them.

Do they have club activities like science club? Demonstrations can be for up to 100 of so kids. Activities really need to be capped at 20 kids.

Is he in LISD? Mainly because schools now needs background checks. I have mine.

Yup he’s an LISD kiddo.
I know they have a STEM special rotation but no true club that I’m aware.

Have you ever heard of national cardboard day? That would be a fun thing to host here…labor intensive for sure.

You would say that, I just took a couple of carloads of cardboard to the recycler.
