Dust Collection and other Wood Shop Chores

Today I am looking for a few hours of help. I will be at the space from about 1PM -5PM.

  • Dust collection needs to now accommodate new table saw, Edge Sander, Spindle sander and Band saw.
  • New Table saw needs to be calibrated. I started yesterday and found that the table is off by a 1/16th of an inch at least. I will need more than a few hands for this part.

These are the few things I hope to accomplish today, but other things might include

  • Signage
  • Removing all Personal Storage from the Wood Shop.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello. I am just seeing this now. I am happy to head on over (takes me ~30 mins to get there), but it might be a little too late at this point in the day. I’ll monitor this thread for any responses.

Also, how’s the progress going? Will there be any more activity like this tomorrow?

I just saw this, and am in Mesquite… I wish I would have seen this earlier today.

I will catch the Field day next time. :disappointed:

…X…

Goog job on this wood shop has started to become quite the catch all

So Kent and Chris came out to help with the saw calibration. It took us WAY longer than I thought it would, but it is now with in .001 of an inch. Dust collection did not get done today. I will be up tomorrow and will use as many hands as possible to get that done. I should be there around noon. Hope to see you there.

TL, DR: Come help Sunday June 14th at noon.

From time to time I hear about people who would like to shadow someone making projects in the woodshop. While today’s tasks don’t sound like the kind of project you have in mind, it is an opportunity to hang out with others and learn skills and ask questions about the use of tools, or whatever topic you want. Just a hint to those who want to learn (and help out at the same time).

For those that know nothing about tablesaws, what is that calibration number measuring?

The angle of the blade relative to the miter slots on the table. The blade, fence and miter slots should all be parallel. If it’s off, when you push wood through its dangerous and can bind against the fence, sled or miter gauge. Yesterday we calibrated it to within .001 of an inch.

While I am sure there are many many others, this is the table saw tune-up/alignment URL I keep bookmarked, and which I read over whenever I am going to tune-up my t/s: http://www.newwoodworker.com/basic/tsalign.html.

Thanks to @mblatz and @Kentamanos we were able to get some more stuff accomplished.

There are a few more things that need to be done but I won’t be around for a few days.

On the Saw Stop

  • Calibrate the riving knife. It currently binds as you push wood through.
    – The Manual should be on the saw.
  • @Cmorgan started a holder/wall hanger for the cross cut miter table. If someone could finish that. It would be great.

Other Chores.

  • The band saws need dust collection finished.
  • The large dust collector was starting to blink when I left, If you have a moment please empty it.
  • Organize hand wood working tools area.
  • Some members aren’t putting things back so currently it’s all in shambles. Any help in this area would be appreciated. If you see someone not doing what needs to be done, please tactfully let them know that’s not the culture we want here. Be friendly and lead by example.

Basic signs that need to be designed/made:

  • NO PERSONAL STORAGE IN WOOD SHOP (Needs to be on every wall)
  • Items will be considered donation to the scrap pile
  • CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF
  • PUT TOOLS BACK
  • TRAINING REQUIRED (printed, just need hung)
  • Table Saws, Jointer, Large Bandsaw.

I was totally unaware the large bandsaw needed training. What is that different about it?

A bit off topic, but a thought I had the other day(when contemplating posting a rant on importance of cleaning up in a shared workspace), when you see someone potentially leaving a mess, one tact would be asking them if they would like help cleaning up their mess, maybe they just don’t know where supplies or the expectations of being excellent. Offering to help avoids the potentially negative / accusatory aspect of yelling hey clean that up at someone when maybe they were about to anyway.

The main differences are that it has a brake, a more difficult guard and carter bearings so it is for Re Sawing ONLY. While it is for re-sawing only we don’t have a re-sawing fence set up for it yet.

New thread for this discussion: Sawstop Table Saw/Calibrating and Aligning the Riving Knife

Interesting idea. Well I’m not currently trained through DMS on any of the equipment (waiting for a class so I can be ‘official’ beyond prior experience) but plan to be making a small table here before too long. If anyone wants to watch me curse at incorrect measurements and cuts they’re more than welcome to. Only thing I don’t really know how to use is the jointer/planer which I wouldn’t touch until I actually get trained on that. The rest I’ve used often in other forms, just always did my jointing/planing by hand.

I am heading to the space later to do general clean up and maintenance on tools in the woodshop. I plan on doing this from noon - 3:30pm today. Any help would be appreciated.
