Does Dallas Makerspace have a machine capable of sewing a leather seat pad?

(I am breaking this out into a new thread and will move the related responses here as well…)

We have a leather sewing machine. It requires training.

@bitta

Can the leather sewing machine handle that? I swear I remember a conversation about this or something similar.

Harold I believe told me he reupholstered some car seats using the Rex.

How do you get training on it?

You can get a pretty good start at understanding what tools CA has by looking at the Creative Arts section of the Tools listed on the Wiki.

Thanks, that helped a lot. The Pfaff or Rex will both do the job.

All depends on the thickness of the leather you want use. We’re working on resolving some needle/thread/machine capacity compatibility issues with the machines, right now and will offer classes on them once we have that nailed down. …but in the meantime I’ll gladly help you get it set up one on one for a specific project, just PM me your availability.

No thIcker than an 1/8". The Pfaff and Rex can handle it easily. The leather is very supple almost like vinyl. I’ve stitched 1/4" heavy leather like a belt on a Pfaff before.

The question is how to get trained on them? Seems like all the tools I want to use and am somewhat proficient in I need to be trained on first. It’s understandable that safety procedures and space protocol needs to be explained. The confusing part is how to actually get trained by who and when. It seems like patience is a virtue. I’ll need to keep an eye out for trainings.

I think you just need Leatherworking Basics. The next is full for this month but it’s generally offered pretty often.

The leather sewing machines require training specific to those machines…leatherworking basics gets you access to the hand tools and consumables.

@bitta

Thanks @bitta, I’ll get with you soon to go over this and find a convenient time for you to go over the machines. I’m not at the point to build this seat cushion, but I could grad some of the material I want to use and give it a whirl. I appreciate the offer.

@bitta - I see there is a Leather SIG Meeting on November 20th. This looks like the one to attend in order to get signed off on the machines? I’ll sign up for that if so.

We’ll have training classes specific for the machines later on, but yes, we can work in a one on one at a SIG mtg. Look forward to meeting you!

Good way to meet other people interested in leather work and some amy have done something similar to what you’re doing. That’s really the main purpose of the SIG meetings and also serve as a mini-committee meeting.

Take photos of your project and post them - it’s great to see what people are up to and doing.
