Does anybody know how to design speaker crossovers?

I am an amateur speaker builder and so far I have just built speakers that other folks have designed. I’m looking to build a new set and would love to meet up with someone who knows about crossover design and enclosure design etc.

Thanks!

Henry

reddit.com/r/diyaudio and reddit.com/r/diysound are some good resources as well.

I’m in the same boat as you, I’ve built a few existing designs and tinkered but never fully designed a crossover from scratch, although I have worked with my dad on a couple of his. I think the biggest challenge is measurement, it’s hard to model things like baffle-step compensation and how that will interact with a typical room.

I’ve considered getting a microphone and doing a mini-dsp based active setup, but it gets pricey unless you have an 8-channel amp lying around. You could do something similar with a passive crossover, build a rough idea of what you want and then measure and tweak components until you’re satisfied.

Some great resources here with links to software:

Thanks everyone! I appreciate it!

Reminds me of an Army buddy (who lived in the barracks) who thought he needed a pair of Bose 901’s for his barracks room. They were stupid expensive and stupid loud for that small space. Like, even on the lowest volume they were too loud.

Also, I can’t help reading “$800 bucks” as “eight hundred dollars bucks.”
