Do we have mortising bits around for the drill press?

I have a project in mind for a piece, but I need a mortising bit for the drill press to make it happen and I don’t recall seeing any of those around the shop during the last cleanup - Might they be hidden away in a storage locker we didn’t get into with the shop vac?

Not to my knowledge.

I brought a set down from STL your welcome to use it

I’ve always wanted a vertical mortiser. Never see them on CL though.

We’ve discussed adding one and I think it would be a good addition at some point in the future.

Well, there is always the traditional method. Not hard, and one of the easier hand techniques to learn…

A mortising bit in a vertical drill will practically always be more precise than a hand chisel for clean angels especially against the grain of the wood which is what I have in mind in my current application.

I need to bore out a clean cross grain mortise into a turned piece of oak to a very specific depth - perfectly centered.

Doesn’t lend itself well to hand chisel work.

I disagree. Hand chisel work, allows one to ‘sneak’ up on a perfect fit. Power tools, barring CNC control, don’t offer that advantage.

That’s ridiculous. This is absolutely within the wheelhouse of hand tool woodworking.

Power tools have been around 100+ years. Mortise and tenons joints have been around 1000+ years.

I found a 1/2" bit on amazon for $11.80 and placed my order -

I’d rather spend 15 minutes making a jig to hold a round piece in a clamp to get a perfect 90 degree mortise to size in under an hour than spend a few days and a lot of scrap trying to hand tool this with a chisel across grain.

and hey - if you need further justification - gave me an excuse to buy a cool new bit

If nothing else just combine the two. Have the mortising bit hog out the majority of the mortise and leave you nice clean edges (vs rounded with clearing it out via a twist bit) and then on the ends finish it with chisel.

I have that exact chisel here in Dallas if anyone wants to try! It did sit in storage condensing water for a year so, I’d say a good 2 hours of work to get it back in shape for chopping mortises.

I’m guessing you found something like this:

But how do you plan to use it without at least the quill attachment portion of this?

That delta set you listed is what I brought down. If all the pieces are there I can bring it up to see if it will mount to our drill press.
