DMS Usage stats?

If this is already a thing, just let me know. I’m stuck in a walking boot for a few more weeks and would probably be a danger to myself and others if I came to the Space so my mind is working hard…

My job involves analysis and I’m always looking for ways to keep my skills sharp. Do we collect and/or analyze usage information about the space? With the right information from Membership and door card/key readers, and possibly Talk, possibly member drive stats, I could work up some stats like

  • Days, weeks, months with most/least member badge-in events
  • Which doors are used most and when
  • Most/least/average number of badge-in events per member per (time unit)
  • Members who are paying but not coming; family memberships that are being underutilized
  • Members with personal storage bins who haven’t come in x weeks/months
  • Member drive file storage versus activity at the space

And fun things like

  • Correlation between Talk post volume and badge-in events at the space ( heehee)

And lots of other things I haven’t thought of but someone else might already have in mind…

Please note - I would NOT need any personally identifiable information, provided the data is set up “right” - just an identifier to tie a Membership payment to door keys to Talk profiles. And honestly I don’t want or care about that. As a part of the recent member surge, I would like to do my part to add to understanding of what 1,400+ members means.

Like I said, this may be something that’s already done and if so I’ll shut up.

I too am an data analysis type (last job before retiring was Statistical Process Control and Management of Key Characteristics). Right now I track and post the membership count, type, cash flow, I started out doing it for Finance Committee purposes but post it regularly as it seems folks find it interesting.

Want to start getting into the drop-outs so we can get a better grip on churn and why. @John_Marlow and I share some data we gathered back and forth (both enjoy data driven information/decisions). She has done some interesting stuff.

If there are enough nerdy analytical types, we could form a Metrics SIG say under Finance. From there we could decide what to track, where to get info, etc. I they this would be of great value to the Space in decision making over all kinds things: from PR to Storage.

I’ve done some research on actual data from our access control system for the doors. Here are some of the highlights.

  • Weekends are busier by a fair amount
  • Month to month there’s not a significant difference
  • Some members have never badged a single time
  • One member badged in over 3,000 times in one month
  • Around 700 unique badges are used every month give or take

Some of the other data points are not practical to gather because there’s no hard link between them. For example many people use aliases on the file server for their share or some people register on Talk using a different email from the one they used for their membership.

One member badged in over 3,000 times in one month

How…? 100 times a day, ~5 times an hour. Did they copy the chip and disseminate it?

Every time you go through a door counts.

True. But there’s really only 4 doors I can think of that need rfid to pass through in the space barring specialty doors like the breaker room.

But think how many times you go through that door to the workshop when you’re here and use your badge.

Hey you gotta go, you gotta go. Lol

Honestly not a whole lot. The space is pretty well divided in my minds eye by those interior doors as to what tools are in the parts you’re going to be in the rest of the time you’re there working on your project.

But then people use it for different things. I was mainly curious as to whether it was a legit count or not.

Waivers per Day

3000 times in a month certainly seems hard to achieve. It’d be interesting to see the timing of the scans on that one.

I assume that someone was trying to harvest magnetic energy from the RFID reader. :money_mouth:

Don’t worry, the 3,000 a month was legit.

Brainstorming more…

It could be possible to pull “equipment down” and “resolved” posts from Talk and correlate with badge-in stats. And possibly class dates from the calendar.

Such as,

  • When the jointer (or other equipment is down) does it affect attendance at the space?
  • Which classes could be bringing about higher attendance in the following days?

Was that back when members used their “badge” to purchase food and drink in the galley before the Park Pantry?

I am looking at a plot where not a single day is > 100 scans, yet for 30 days, it would take 100 scans to make 3000 duing the month. Something not adding up?

I would point out what I might call the American Spirit factor. For those of us with terrible habits, this terrible habits lends maker to be in vacinity of door more often than usual. Out of generally acceptable behavior, he/she may be inclined to hold the door for those scuttling in/out, often carry projects. Also, their bad habit has them visiting the smokers outposts in and out often. Just sayin…

Or was it back when a user kept having to come into the building for potty breaks and to plug their water and electricity back in for their bus?

We have members who go back and forth through the inside doors quite often during their multi-hour daily visits. We also have smokers who go in and out often to smoke, who tend to be at the Space for many hours a day, every day. It’s not really that difficult to see how a member in either scenario could really rack up some numbers on the door scanners.

Considering a lot of members get side tracked :squirrel: and forget to update the #issues-requests threads until after a reminder or few, the numbers would probably not be very accurate at all.

Kewl concept to try to number crunch and get some stats on other stuff though!
