Is there no official thread for the DMS party? No one wants to be the party pooper.
11 days and counting!
VECTOR is bringing at least eight pinball machines, music, and dazzling laser FX for your pleasure. What else we got going on?

We have some discussion in Off-topic, but nothing official.
I’m trying to pull something together, but I don’t have any equipment and I’m limited on money and ideas.
Another hot sauce tasting in the break room & vote for your top three? Relatively cheap, easy, and fun.
Big bowl of suckers & one has a free month membership coupon for new members rolled inside?
Bio might be able to do something with hot sauce; one of our members has a bunch of ghost peppers. I can’t speak for him, but he might already be planning something.
I don’t know if any of you guys are on Nextdoor.com, but someone mentioned
it on there so there might be a little influx from some Carroltonians.
Just promoted to my Nextdoor chums… good idea. Still, we need more than a start and end time to get this kicking. Alyssa mentioned possibly bringing her R2D2. Would be good to show pics and mention if so. Anyone else got cool stuff to bring or fun ideas?
@Diplomat had an almost 4 hour planning meeting to launch the messaging and advertising for the grand opening announcement. More than likely he’ll let everyone know the plan after the follow up meeting Thursday at 6:30. There was very little participation (only 5 of us), so if anyone is interested in helping spread the word, please attend the meeting. It will also likely cover logistics, preparation and setup.
Please keep in mind, not everyone can attend weekday meetings.
… looking forward to more details!
'n Thanks @nickdangerous for the enthusiasm, posts (here and on Facebook) and of course SHINY STUFF! (aka Pinball and kewl lights and ooooooooooooooooh shiny! )
Maybe DMS should consider video recording and webcasting some of its meetings? Something like was done for the Schoolbus project a few weeks ago, maybe? We could use it for classes, too.
I would love it if more classes and meetings were either webcast/streamed and/or recorded!
Open House might be a great thing to webcast. We could have a media personality taking the live (or time shifted) Web audience around the Space all day so folks at home could see what we are doing.
I also intend to install a live pinball cam above one or more of the machines. Just a fun PR thing.
So… about this open house party…
OK folks… as we push forward let’s discuss the importance of “FFF”:
Attendance to any event you are promoting, no matter how high-minded nor philanthropic, is fundamentally driven by the three F’s: Food, Fun, and Fellowship. You see, people are basically creatures of habit and are driven by the dopamine-reward-system. Good event planners use this system to steer people to their events. Booth babes/hunks, blinky light displays, free schwag… it’s all about tickling those happy receptors in your grey matter.
Thus, the best way to get people to visit DMS is to use your committee to capitalize upon FFF. It is not enough to open the front door and wait for a party to spontaneously occur. Doesn’t work that way. Put simply: No FFF, no party.
For example, one way to attract people to the Aerospace Committee would be to set up a small obstacle course or racetrack and award a prize to the winner. See? Instant fun, instant draw for curious visitors. People need a little extra “push” to ask the right questions… and FFF is the grease that spins that wheel.
Another would be Bio… perhaps a hot sauce tasting made with those fiery peppers or free beer brewed from the latest batch? There ya go… food and fun in one go!
Still another would be creative arts. Perhaps some kind of crazy blacklight “art tunnel” room with artwork on the walls and/or areas where people could free-form drawings and writings with ultraviolet pens. Ooooh neato.
Luckily, VECTOR’s job is pretty easy in this regard, because arcade tech/engineering/repair is our forte. Our contribution is to transform an entire room into a blinking, clicking, interactive portal of fun. Not coincidentally, over 50 have already committed to show up. But we shouldn’t stop here!
So… think about ways to “FFF” your committee and fold it into the Open House gig. That’s the secret to making any event into one worth remembering.
Another idea for 3D committee: Dedicate someone who can print a small memento of the event with the visitor’s name on it & let them see the process unfold. Something small which could be printed relatively quickly. They would likely record a video of the printout on their phone, promote it to their FB, and bam… more PR… more fun.
I have my Gocupi I could setup on a whiteboard in one of the rooms for a demo. Is there any DMS logo SVG for the gocupi I could print, I’m too lazy to make one.
Excellent idea. People love to see Gocupi creating art. Is it possible to have it draw quick and dirty portraits of people? Or is that too time-consuming to create the files?
The tool chain for the gocupi isn’t that advanced yet. I could draw some of the stuff I already have on the Pi like Starry night and haley’s majora’s mask.
Is there an overall agenda or plan for the open house? Sorry, I’m just now thinking about it and did not know about the above meeting per @Clayton, above.
For example,
We’ll totally set that up if you are volunteering to be the piercee.
