DMS becomes irrelevant on the internet

Noticed we have lost 100,000 ish links to DMS on the internet this year.
That’s over 2/3ds of our total links
We’ve gone from 140k+ links to 43k

Most people stumble upon DMS on the internet somehow.
Those stumbling places are disappearing.

Judging by other spaces we’re at like 5-20% of where we should be

What causes to lose that many links and what can we do to replace

Any idea where links to us typically appear and what types of sites/links have disappeared?

It comes down to content creation 70% of the forums are locked for no reason.

The wiki is not being updated with projects.
The website rarely is updated.

I managed the AdWords account for years and it’s important to keep fresh data on the site.

Personally open up the forums for more content.
Add more dynamic content to the website
Centrally manage social media with scheduled releases at least weekly.

This is why it happened. We deemed ourselves not worthy of being visible and blocked ourselves out.

Not my forte, but I would think we have a plethora of folks at DMS who could help us ‘course-correct’ on driving up clicks and available links.

I agree with your comments about the staleness of our data, but where do you get that 70% number for the forums? I can’t find anything in the Admin reports/information that suggests that.

That’s interesting. Using 2019 YTD, Discourse shows there is no statistically relevant trend to referral clicks or to daily referral clicks.

2019 Total Clicks Details

No Statistically relevant trend related to total clicks:

I removed the clicks from known foreign referrals for the statistical analysis. Those represent about 5% of the referrals. Those people aren’t likely membership candidates and I don’t particularly care about people in Russia or China who are viewing DMS websites.

The months have different numbers of days but there is still no statistically relevant trend.

2019 Daily Clicks Details

No statistical correlation for 2019 daily clicks:

I see that Kevin included Oct - Dec 2018, so when I add those numbers in, the trend changes significantly. There is now a statistically relevant upward trend to both referral clicks and daily referral clicks.

My takeaway: DMS is oddly popular on the Car Talk forums…

News coverage and appearances on other people’s sites would help that.

Using the numbers that Discourse tallies, I come up with the opposite. 68% of our forum content is publicly accessible.

This is based upon the count of new topics created. I do not have a way to get number of views per topic or anything else.

DMS Operations is comprised of Issues & Requests, Logistics, Infrastructure, Finance, Expansion, & Committee announcements.

Working Groups is comprised of Moderators, Staff, Bylaws, and Internal Infrastructure.

Don’t forget the period of full lock down which likely broke thousands of links to the forum.

Thanks Chris for pulling this information

Fun Fact- probably 5+ years ago that’s how I first heard about the Makerspace, a car forum.

I heard about DMS while searching for 3D Laser scanners and 3D printers…Dallas. It was for a specific project.

I think some people search out and read about things they want to do, then the Papal Mainframe sends them a link to us (in DFW). We need to get friendlier with the Papal Mainframe.

I heard a story on NPR about makerspaces and I check to see if there was one in the area. This is when the MF was still on ladybird. I checked out what I can see of it on the side and wallet look interesting there was nothing at that moment that said come and look at this place. But I kept checking in overtime and finally in the spring after we moved to this location I decided to come check it out. It was actually ceramics at the time that attracted me. I came close to joining that night but didn’t and the next week my husband lost his job and I delay joining until July of that year. They final thing that said yes this is worth your money was the creation of The Joint Committee. What is funny is the old location was a sight that I grow within a block of two or three times a week. But the online content did not Draw Me In. I will be very honest from what I saw online it look like a mile dominated and mostly Tech dominated Place rather than a creative place. Of course once I got here and saw I realized yes it was a very creative place as well. But we need to look at our content so that we draw in both the gates and the artist and the simply crafty people and that we have things on there that appeal to men and women young folks and also farts as well

Of course the fact that we have people who object to the Baby Boomers being now and we have a officer right now that is stated he wants to drive some folks away is a problem with doing this. And no I will not say who that person is publicly it was on Discord you can go look yourself the thing about baby boomers was actually published don’t talk. If we want to succeed and continue growing we need all of these groups. There’s not enough of one group to make this place the most successful Makerspace in the world. We need all of us

I know, I know…spellcheck and voice to text. I have to admit I giggled like I was in middle school again.

Having attempted to substantiate this, so far, I have been unsuccessful. Anyone else able to?
