Diving into the world of DIY electric scooter, Could use some help!

Hey Guys and Gals,

I’m thinking about building an Electric Cooler Go Kart and was looking for some help. I really have no clue choosing a motor, motor controller, or batteries and was wondering if anyone had links to websites with tutorials on the topic.

I’m think of something that looks kind of like this,

Was thinking about doing a 4 wheel drive setup with tank steering if I could make it work.

I found 2, 7.5Ah 56v Ego lawn mower batteries for $240 should I grab those for my build? They seem really cheap for the voltage and capacity, and the charger can charge them to 100% in 45 minutes.

Please help, if we figure this out, I will share all info with DMS and we can start a new race league!!!

One of the better deals I’ve found on bare cells:

The eGo packs could also be an excellent deal - BMS and charger included - so long as they don’t have DRM or any other … incompatibilities … with using them as simple batteries.

Going to want a high torque gear head motor. We can hit up the mobility scooter store on I35 for power chair motors. Even on eBay/Craigs List you can find whole chairs for $300-$400. They typically run sealed lead acid which makes them suck for recharge time. But if you can switch to Lithium maybe it will be much better.

Thanks everyone so far.

@ESmith, the ego batteries are the best deal I’ve found, I also have the charger and I’ll check and see if there is any DRM on the one I have. Any clue on how I should check this?

These are the hub motors I’m thinking about using.

They seem like they can handle the voltage and four of these motors I would hope would be enough. @StanSimmons we chatted about this on the past, any idea where I should look for a Motor controller.

The early Ryobi ONE+ packs implemented their DRM via reduced voltage output until the tool “authenticated” on the third pin. This feature seem to have been omitted on current-gen 4AH packs.

There are numerous other ways to do this of course. Putting a voltmeter on the main power pins would be a good way to start to see if it’s producing nominal voltage. After that I would see if it delivers power to a load then see if it recharges without complaint.

Thanks @ESmith,
I’ll start there.

@semaphore1999 How did you find the motor controller you used on your one wheel project?

Looks like I chose the wrong motor earlier. The first motor was a dual hub, it seems I should be looking for single hub motors.

This is the new contender,

Also found a cool source for motor controllers,

This looks like a contender so far.
