More people have access to the Discord than this thread. It’s not locked down to the public.
It’s not run by DMS.
Which means it won’t do dumb stuff like block curse words or block the public.
It is hard enough to convince new members and exiting to be active on Talk let alone request that they utilize Talk and another area for discussion. If you want input and true discussion in what I’m told is the “Makerspace Way”, we need to keep it as simple as possible. One place for discussion we ask folks to weigh in on matters that affect the membership at large.
Quite a few of the new members already have discord actually. It’s one of the things I go over in the new member orientation.
Andrew I can see how Discord could be helpful for a small-ish working group to communicate on tasks of the group. But asking the general membership to plug into 80+ post made in one day mostly about paper towels is a non-starter.
I think what you fail to account for is that general membership is not involved in the process at all. It is a small core group of people who continue to help with this stuff. It is not at all unreasonable for someone who wants to help to go to discord. Discord is used to coordinate this stuff. If that is the method, then it makes sense that anyone who wants to be involved would use said method.
Unless you primarily get on Talk at work, and Discord and Google Docs are blocked…
I know a lot of people use their phones
If you read this thread, there are numerous posts encouraging members to use Discord and I was replying to Andrew who says he does encourage Discord in the New Member meetings. You have taken a viewpoint inconsistent with both the thread and the intent of my response.
true, but it looks bad for us to be on phones while at our desks. Just speaking for myself here. I’d likely get more involved in those convo’s but also don’t want that on my mid year review.
where do you work that gsuite is blocked?
Financial Services industry. They are super paranoid about any kind of PII breach (rightly so too).
Can confirm, it is blocked here too
Yup yup, and here
My understanding is that DMS discord is not (yet) under control of Infrastructure, and is not (yet) in any way official.
Is that incorrect?
By that logic talk is not official either? What is it you are trying to point out?
Talk is run on a VM owned by DMS and is run by Infrastructure. The keys to it are controlled by Infrastructure. It is “official”, but I don’t think it is the primary source of “official” information… which is the DMS Wiki.
The DMS discord is run by a few DMS members, and the last time I checked, Infrastructure did not have the passwords to it. As far as I can tell, it was setup in protest of Talk being locked down and controlled. The DMS discord server, unless things have changed recently, is not an “official” channel for DMS business, and shouldn’t be until it is under control of Infrastructure… That being said, it is a nice, fast, easy to use resource that @PearceDunlap and @AndrewLeCody setup and run. I use it daily.
And what exactly does this have to do with the topic at hand? I’m surely hoping you are not suggesting that its “invalid” in some way. There is no “administration” that need occur.
I didn’t say that it was “invalid” just that until DMS has the ability to assert control over it, it can not, and should not be considered “official”, no matter how useful it is… and it is very useful.
There is the “bus problem” also, if the access keys are not written down in Infrastructure documentation, then normal upkeep on the DMS discord could stop unexpectedly… things like BoD, Chairs, etc would not be updated if the current admins stopped for whatever reason.
