Different type of Safety glasses needed at the space!

First, I want to thank whomever added the safety glasses to the bend in the machine shop. That said, not only those glasses, but I have found this to be a problem with ALL of the safety glasses we have at the space. They are not the kind that folks can wear over prescription eye glasses.

I don’t have any experience as to whether this is a big concern in the wood shop; however, in both the machine shop and I suspect the metal shop I can testify from personal experience that chips can easily get in your eyes even when wearing prescription eye glasses. I have taken to bringing my own safety glasses that work for those without eyeglasses as well of those of us who do. I suggest that we start stocking either both, or switch to the dual style.

I have used the DMS safety equipment and then acquired my own safety equipment. My equipment better fits my needs, is a little more comfortable and I am familiar with how to use it. It is not that expensive and I think it is a good idea for makers to acquire their own equipment and use it at DMS.

I appreciate DMS having safety equipment to use by anyone. It makes the tools safer to use and it communicates that DMS wants the user of its tools to use proper safety procedures.

Any recommendations for prescription safety glasses?
What is available, where to get it, etc.

I have been looking around and saw the likes of Wiley X, etc. (ANSI Z87.1).

Anybody experienced with prescription inserts (vs. having the prescription lenses only - not inserts)

Cheers!

Personally, I would not suggest purchasing prescription safety glasses. I have found I need to replace mine every month or so, as they get scratched and such by doing their job. YMMV.

It is about time to order more Safety Glasses.

I was thinking running with a few dozen of these (New Type I have used in the past)

Few dozen of these ( We currently have these)

I ordered Visitor Glasses (62065T32) from McMaster-Carr. Seem to work well. There should be some in the Machine Shop, if you want to check them out. I can buy more, if you want.

Depending on your frames, you can get snap on safety shields. I’ve had to wear safety glasses for so many years all my lenses are safety glass type - not necessarily the the frames but use the shields with them.

If you get a new prescription and by new frames and lenses consider just getting safety lenses for the old frames. My last pair of bi-focal lenses only cost me $38, you don’t need any of the fancy coatings you usually have on you “good glasses”.

If you buy cheater-type reading glasses you can get the same in safety glasses Example of a 2.0 Diopter $12 shipped this is a good cheap alternative. Very commonly used in industry.

These are my favorite safety glasses:

Given my experience with these safety glasses and a few other safety glasses from Pyramex I would defiantly recommend them as a brand.

Those look good at sealing around the edges. How do they work with other glasses on? Can they get the bi-focal?

Looks like they have a version that has lens inserts.
