Diagnostic Tools in Electronics

I’ve got an old HP laptop that won’t power up. It used to get very hot as it aged, so I cracked the egg open and put in a heat sink. I must have not grounded the motherboard properly and after putting Humpty Dumpty back together, I can’t get it to power up. Electronics is not my forte. But I was wondering if Electronics has any testing tools to check the motherboard out or any suggestions that might help me analyze this thing? I’m guessing it probably is fried and I just need to down load the hard drive, but I’m wondering if there is any other solutions I might try before that?

If it’s fried, I’m thinking about making something with the screen!

Thanks for any help or advice.

If I understand your post, it was not powering up. You opened it, added a heatsink, and it is still not powering up.

IMO, it is unlikely your repair attempt had anything to do with it still not powering up.

Since your primary need is to get the information off of the hard drive, bring the laptop by tomorrow early afternoon and we can pull the hard drivve and get your data.

I would suggest the laptop is not worth repairing (if possible).

It actually did power up, but got very hot underneath. So I thought adding a heat sink might help.

But, I agree it’s old and probably done. I do appreciate the help. What time should I show up and do I need to bring an external drive to transfer the data?

Lets say around 12 in Electronics
