Design file conversion class for CA and other stuff

So, this really isn’t a CA issue specifically, but I heard @Photomancer mention this and think it’s a brilliant idea. The short version is a BASIC class on getting images formatted for some of the various tools we have at the DMS. For example, how to take a jpeg, bitmap, or other standard image file and convert it through Inkscape and/or Illustrator for use by the wide format printer, the laser, the vinyl cutter, dye sub printer and anything else that uses 2D images. All that converting paths and stuff and the right file extensions for the right machines can be a little confusing for those that don’t come from a computer design background. (So says the girl who popped her 3D printer cherry last night with a Thingiverse file I’ve on on my keychain flashdrive for over a year!)

This really came into play at the Leatherworking SIG mtg today when with a little help converting the files and a little more help from Fred on the laser, we were able to help Justin make significant and unexpected progress on his leather dragon gauntlet project.

Is there someone out there with the expertise that might be interested in teaching this as a hands-on walkthrough kind of class?

I have had good luck using the tracing feature in Inkscape to get a vector conversion of an image.

The official DMS logo converts perfectly.

Converting a scan of a piece of die-cut wood looks good, but it has lots of redundant paths in it. I am sure it would cut OK on the laser, though with some wasted time. The result should be better than the original (no crushing.)
