Deliveries and the importance of putting them in one place

Please please please if you accept a delivery take it to the black table in the main room. I realize everyone is busy but I’ve had packages put on the freebie shelf (thankfully the person read it on talk and returned the items) and two packages were delivered but they are currently lost in the ether and one was opened up to see what was in it and left on a table.

I have LOTS of stuff coming into the space. All of it costs “our” collective money. All of it has intentions - most for specific classes. Please be aware. Im sure it’s just circumstantial - but it sucks.

I honestly don’t want to get into the habit of delivering things to my house to carry them up because it’s so much better to deliver it straight to where it’s needed.

Thank you rant over.

You might modify the address line on shipping to read:

Dallas Makerspace - CA
Care of: black table in commons room
1825 Monetary Lane - Suite 104
Carrollton, TX 75006

Then someone accepting the package at DMS would get a hint as to what to do with it.

Not all packages will fit on the table in the Common Room; plus a lot of the packages are too bulky or heavy to expect members to lug through the 'Space - when the bulk of the deliveries are delivered in the back…

Could we consider making a portion of one of the shelves near the bay doors that were set aside for the RC committee to designate as our package holding area? The bottom 2.5 - 3 shelves have been taken over by random… “stuff” and are clearly not being used by RC at this time anyway.

I’ve already discussed this with the current RC Chairperson (@hasbridge) and he indicated that he would have no problem with one - or part of one - of the shelves in that spot being used for delivered packages. He did mentioned that Jayson had approached him asking if DPRG might be able to use some of the shelves, as well. It seems like there should be a way to let DPRG have a shelf, have a shelf (or part of one) available for packages, and still have some room for what RC may be planning on keeping there.

Sounds like it has already been considered, if you want that to be a delivery shelf then clear it off, label it as deliveries and announce the implementation of your idea. Think doocracy, not findsomeoneelsetodoitocracy

I have no problem clearing a shelf and labeling it. I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t going to conflict with any other plans.

How about don’t ship your crap to DMS unless you are going to meet the delivery person. I had an impulse to push those boxes off of the loading dock. Pretty egregious to take up an autobay for a day. At least they pushed them aside.

If they are still there this evening off they go!

A lot of deliveries are made at front door and put on the table. If anything that can be put on the table in the Commons Room it is usually looked at by folks there during the day and moved to committee area and or an email sent to whoever that package is there.

Large items delivered to the dock obviously can’t be brought up front. I agree about large items being delivered - that also includes numerous loads of lumber delivered for individual projects that take up a car bay until they get there to move it. If it takes up floor space, even if low profile, has the same impact as a tall box.

What are in those large boxes?

Believe they are car body parts, quarter-panels, etc.

If those are not for official DMS business, they should be treated as unapproved floor storage. How long has it been?

I second this. packages arriving by UPS or Fedex usually come to the front door, but you never know whats going to happen once they get here. I’ve found them all over the place, and frequently some moron will open it up - and leave the contents somewhere/anywhere, and they are lost, and I have to re-buy them. I end up buying stuff for multiple committees, so just because it has my name on it, doesn’t mean it goes to Woodshop. I NEVER ship personal goods directly to the space, because 20% of packages get lost before I see them.

A few suggested rules:

  1. Place all packages arriving at the front door on the black table in the commons room.
  2. If it isn’t your package, do NOT open it. Do NOT take it to whatever you think the committee space is. Do NOT remove the packing list or invoice.

As to back door stuff - again, I suggest NEVER shipping your personal purchases to DMS, unless you’re willing to buy it twice.

Large items MUST be delivered to the freight doors, most carriers won’t even unload them without a dock or ramp. The doors and ramp are there for the purpose of receiving such freight. Just because the doors open into committee areas, doesn’t mean the rest of the world gives a shit. If its in the way, carefully move it, but not so far that the person or Committee buying it won’t easily find it… If we had employees, you might be justified in bitching about it sitting there too long. We don’t, so it may take a bit to get where it belongs. So instead of bitching, or running around looking for someone to tattle on, be a good person, and help.

As for personal stuff - if it isn’t DMS property, the storage rules should apply. People shouldn’t ship their personal purchases to DMS - ever.

Not unless I need some fenders for a corvette, then ship away brother!

When I order anything for the Space I put SHIP TO: Dallas Makerspace - Machine Shop, I know Nicole’s packages almost always say Dallas Makerspace Creative Arts, Art’s form Electronics usually do also.

If items ordered would put the committee in the Dallas Makerspace line it goes a long way in ID’ing where it goes or belong to. It also identifies it as being for a committee and not not a personal purchase.

Mine usually say Woodshop on them, but the problem is, if you drop the package in the woodshop area, it’ll be gone before I ever see it. There needs to be a dedicated spot for packages (black table), and people need to leave them alone after depositing there.

I leave them on the table, except CA’s, I’ll and put it where it belongs. I’ll send a PM to the committee chair if a package arrives.

Yeah, but you’re pretty clued in to whatever Nicole is ordering, so you’d be the exception case. Andrew and I stay pretty synched up on ordering, and if it were just us, I’d say no prob, but neither of us hangs out too often in the common room, so we miss the chicanery with packages when it happens.

If you have a lockable cabinet, give me the combo and I’ll put things that come there and notify you and Andrew. Not a problem if you want me to do it.
