This comment got me thinking. I suspect, I am in the same boat as most members when I say that I don’t know the name of the vast majority of our members. Add to that I don’t carry a watch, and usually not a phone, so I have no idea what time it is, just how would one go about ‘reporting’ a situation that violates the rules given those constraints?
Also, I thought the preferred system was to talk with the person first and point out the concern? I’d really hate to see us start resorting to ‘running to the principal’ when for the vast majority of the cases a simple friendly conversation is all that is needed.
I completely agree. You definitely want to try to talk to the person directly first, and if they’re argumentative or continue doing what they’re doing, you should contact the committee head with an approximation of what time it was and where.
I would also add, when talking to them the first time introduce yourself and ask their name. Make sure to write the name down when you walk away.
We have had incidents all around the space that have been stopped from members being willing to just talk to each other. Don’t be scared to talk. Also, if they continue and you feel like what is happening is going to end in and individual being hurt, ask them to leave the space. I’ve had to do this in the past and though it was very awkward, I think it helped and no one was hurt, and feeling seemed to heal.
