The DFW Grotto is a group of cavers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area who explore, study, and promote conservation of caves in Texas and beyond.
This Sunday, Feb 7th, members of the DFW Grotto will be demonstrating commonly used and accepted vertical techniques for caving Sunday, February 7th at 9 AM at the Lancaster Bridge in Fort Worth, weather permitting. Bring your own gear and ropes if you want, we will have some ropes and can rig a pulley system if any novices want practice with changeovers or other maneuvers. We will have some gear for you to try out if you don’t have your own. We will rig off the steel rails of the bridge, and also rig up a rebelay course. We invite all area cavers to come out and get some practice in, and anyone interested can join us for lunch after we’re finished with vertical work. More information on our facebook page.

Where: Interactive Classroom - 1825 Monetary Ln #104 Carrollton, TX 75006

The Grotto meets the second Wednesday of every month. Intrigued by caving? Check us out! Visitors are welcome.
Come hear about caving trips happening over the next few months and the annual convention of the National Speleological Society, July 16 - 23, in Ely, Nevada.
The program for this meeting is part of an ongoing series on cave mapping. There will be a video and demonstration of cave mapping instruments (compass and clinometer). Participants will learn the purpose of these instruments and how to read them.
Part 2 of the program will take place at March’s meeting. You may try your hand at learning how to map a cave by mapping the classroom we meet in and down the hall. Participants will learn how to decide where to place survey stations, stretch a survey tape, read the instruments, and “keeping book”, which means properly recording data and sketching field maps, both plan and profile views. If you already know how to do all this, please come help teach.
The grotto library will be there for grotto members to peruse and consider checking out a caving book. If you have a book checked out, please finish reading it and return it.
Our formal meeting will end at 9:00 p.m. and we will relocate to a different location for food and drinks. In the past we’ve gone to the Taco Cabana on Webb-Chapel Rd., one block south of 635. That’s when true caver networking happens.
