Creative Arts tool purge - let me know what you think

It’s time to cull some of our non-used creative arts materials. This is a hard decision but we need to look at the tools that haven’t been utilized. Take a good look at the list below and present an argument for why it should stay or go.

Projector (this was donated and would be retuned to the donor)
Large easel (and possibly the small one)
Pegboards
Knitting Machine

The big one:
The digital drawing media workstation (drawing pad, adobe suite, computer) would be moved to digital arts room and free up some space.
Let me know what you feel - this should be an open discussion.

Tools will be moved out after the creative arts meeting on the 13th dependent on vote.

The knitting machine has always seemed like something really wonderful to me, but I’ve never known whom to talk to about actually using it, if in fact it is usable.

I agree with you but in my year here I haven’t seen a single class taught on it nor anyone teaching a class. It can be used without power but we purchased a cable and proceeded to loose the cable.
We could buy the cable again.

If you don’t want the knitting machine there I can take it back home.

I don’t really think we should be moving that computer to Digital Arts to
save room. They have less room than we do (and you need a lot of space to
light and shoot video in, which is why that room has always been “empty.”)
Perhaps it would be better to get rid of the separate computer for the
vinyl cutter.

My vote goes to keep the computer as well. I use it to work on illustrator and often work on router files at the space on it. Also, I see John Webb also using it on a nearly daily basis. I would hope we could keep it around.

CA would not be “getting rid” of the computer - it would be transferred to Digital Media where other digital image files are processed. We talked to Jay before we considered even moving it.

That computer is, of necessity, the only one that can run the SewArt64 software for “programming” embroidery designs.

I’d be interested in learning the knitting machine if you end up keeping it.

I just want to restate that we would not be loosing the computer we would just be putting it in another room for digital arts to have. I will talk to @brooksbanister about loading the embroidery software on another computer. Jay seemed really excited about the possibility of gaining a work machine- space management would be in his court, makerspace or it’s members would not be loosing access to the tool at all. On the opposite side - keeping it in the room would keep the software near the embroidery machine (but I believe it can be loaded onto the other machines with ease).

The knitting machine looks and I’m sure is awesome but I haven’t seen a single soul use it since I joined (which I suppose is about a year). I have tried to find teachers but I’ve always come up empty handed. IF someone is wanting to use or teach it - scream right now please.

I suspect you meant @bscharff.

Hopefully better stated,

I want the computer to stay in creative arts, not just to have access to the computer. But to have access and be in the creative arts room. The room often has interesting and creative people as well as other art tools that I tend to use while working. Examples: Rulers, Nicole and David. Digital arts is a dead, quite, and empty room by design. I don’t work well creatively in spaces like that. I’d send a picture of my office which is a mess and has no doors, but I don’t want to be flagged for posting Dirty Pics on the forum.

The Vinyl cutter computer is useless for anything other than vinyl cutting, and the computer attached to the printer serves a similar purpose as I don’t want to stop others from printing. The computer with the drawing pad is nice to work on and allows creative social interaction.

Am I begging enough for you to reconsider?

The Digital Media room is not a good place for the design computer. It is sometimes reserved for photo or video shoots during which time the computer is not accessible.

We now officially have the cutest thread on TALK.

Who can say no to broken arms hedge hog.

If it’d be possible to combine the printer computer with the Vinyl cutter printer, that sounds like a good idea to me.

Ok apparently many have talked to @Photomancer about this and it’s not a popular idea. I’ll see what we can do to push all the computers together and make the space sing a bit.

Thanks for the emotional manipulation with cute photos. You know me well.
