Creating Less Dust in the Wood Shop

Wood shop green lighted a pilot project a couple of weeks back to reduce the amount of escaped dust. The dust in question has been found in the server rooms, the cafe area, and as far away as Twisted Root.

@michaelb is heading up the pilot project, and making great progress.

The first phase includes the two table saws. The objective is to automatically open the dust gates upon the saw starting and then automatically closing them after each use. If this is successful, over time the technology will be rolled out to all the other stationary tools in wood shop. Down the road should also control the Felder. Auto start and auto shut down could be a reality.

We have also ordered and @got_tools (I assume  ), will be installing a swing away dust collection guard on the saw Stop table saw. Hopefully moving us towards a safer and less dust producing area of the Makerspace.

There is a possible down side to all of this… Members will no longer enjoy that extra bit of fiber that drifts onto their meals when they eat in the cafe area.

Turning off the compressed air in woodshop would reduce a huge amount of airborne dust. Some people just don’t seem to understand that you shouldn’t “sweep the floor” with the air hose.
