Create your own high quality yagi antenna

With the tools we have (metal shop, machine shop, and 3D Fab) producing a great 2M five element yagi is very easy. A different frequency or number of elements is only slightly more difficult.

Is this something that can be used on a Baofeng UV-5R?

Yep, any 2M radio in any mode (CW, digital, SSB, or FM). You would just need the appropriate connection cable.

One thing to be aware of though, is that the Baofeng radios are not FCC compliant in the 2M band. They emit too large a signal in the first harmonic which is in an area of the radio spectrum assigned to the US military. This yagi can raise the power level of that spurious signal to the point that you might garner notice.

An easy solution is to produce a simple low pass filter to place that 2nd harmonic signal low enough to not exceed FCC requirements.
