Create a shortcut for Win programs to start in "High Priority" for better peformance

I’m sure alot of you know this.

After recently adding more RAM, solid-state drives, and a video card to improve my video editing computer I wanted to make sure my Windows environment was doing everything it could to improve video preview and render times.

One thing is to run your video editor in “High Priority”.

You can do this through Task manager > Processes > right-click on the program > Set Priority > High.

(I’m not sure why real-time is a bad idea but people recommend against it.)

However, you can follow this article and create a shortcut that starts the program in high priority saving you time. https://m.wikihow.com/Make-a-Program-Start-at-High-Priority-(Windows)

The video editor that I use is Vegas Pro 16. As buggy as it is, it’s what I know.

So here’s what the text file will look like provided that your software and file locations are the same as mine.

Start “VEGAS Pro 16.0” /high “C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 16.0\vegas160.exe”

For us video editors on a budget every little bit helps!

Real time will make your mouse/keyboard fight for clock cycles, as they’ll no longer have priority. It stinks.

I have been using this process for a long time and haven’t had any of those problems. However it’s good to know that could be an issue.

Here is a new video series that we have started related to Sony magix Vegas Pro nonlinear video editing software:

Here is the first video: https://youtu.be/MaHV54MT_P0

What hardware are you using right now? Changing the process priority will make little or no difference unless you’re competing for resources with background tasks. If that’s the case either something is very wrong with your installed software or the hardware is very old.

A little difference is just fine. I was render a 4k video that took 4 hours the other day. 1% better makes a big difference.

Here is a list of the hardware:

By far the CPU is the biggest limiting factor here. Sony Vegas will use multiple CPU threads for most tasks. The CPU in that system is 6 years old and it has 4 cores. That’s not a lot of cores for what you’re doing.

That processor and motherboard combo would take those 4 hour renders down to 1 hour or less. You’d also need memory because the memory you have now isn’t compatible with newer motherboards. The rest of your hardware is fine. Could save a little money and get a cheaper motherboard. Processor and motherboard listed separate since they don’t have a combo for this configuration.

There are much cheaper options and much more expensive options. I feel like this offers good bang for the buck for applications that benefit from multiple CPU threads.

Thats good info brother…

I also tried HVEC codec and it was 30% - 40% faster and seemingly just as good an image.
