Crafting for a Cause - CA is getting rowdy

One of our newish members Meghan Andreartha (AKA Cupcake) has come up with a concept and I think it’s amazing so I’ve trying to help it grow and I wanted to share it with you guys. She’s going to host a monthly workshop to benefit various local charities. I’m working as her backup dancer trying to gather interest and supplies. Together we are a sloth loving team of weirdos who are trying to better the world.

It’s starting in January with knitting/crocheting hats for a Dallas Based Homeless Shelter (The Bridge) and continues
Feb: Hats for Cemo Patients (Crochet for Cancer)
March: Blankets Turning Point
April: Blankets for Turning Point
June: Working with Promise House (LGBT youth shelter)
July: Plastic Sleeping Mats for the Homeless

You know me I just can’t make something simple so I reached out to Scrap in Denton and they are going to sponsor the first event with $25 worth of supplies. Meghan is working with Walmart for additional donations of snacks to fuel the peoples (yes, feed the peoples). The class isn’t eligible for honorariums so we are trying to work out ways to support it creatively. This isn’t so much as a class but a time and space to work towards something communal. Yesterday I sent out 25 letters/posters to local yarn/fiber shops with an explanation of the program in hopes to get some support both in physical energies, PR, and physical donations. I asked Michael Paskar @macapaka to design a poster which he did effortlessly (so badass). I sent out 5 press releases to local papers in hopes that we can get some coverage and free PR with this (oh human interest stories how I love you). Whew, fun. I’ve been searching for a way we can get into the news and I think this is a pretty solid angle.

Meghan is going to be placing a box in the CA room to gather donations for the event and other items The Bridge is asking for.
