Couple of welding questions

Used the MIG yesterday. Right wall power plug did not seem to be live. Left power plug worked fine.
Also welding air mover was making strange noises and did not seem to have any air flow. May have turned it on wrong or something, but assume it is not that complex.
Also I left some residue on the welding table since I was not sure what the process is for cleaning up the welding table. Do you just buff it with a grinder?

If you mean the filter system mounted on the wall - iy may have been going through it’s filter purge/cleaning cycle.

Basically given the current state of that table not being close to flat.

Sounds like a breaker. @Team_Infrastructure if someone doesn’t beat me to it. since I recall that outlet being in the locked electrical room

I reset it, it’s back up and powered.

Quick question – one of my students for tomorrow was hoping someone could help him figure out how to weld his muffler.

  1. We’d have to take it off the car, right? It strikes me that it’s entirely too close to the gas tank to be welded in situ.

  2. Any chance of one of y’all being around? I’m willing to wing it. Muffler repair doesn’t seem like something that needs a particularly strong weld.

Also – @TLAR – being as this is on a vehicle, would you like to weigh in? The welding class is at 3:30, so I’ll be using the MIG until, probably, 5:30 or so.

Definitely disconnect it from the car. It will be too hard to weld around, and dangerous to boot.

Personally, I’d TIG weld it so you don’t lose the stainless properties of the muffler. You see a lot of fly by night mechanics just MIG weld it, but if you want a true weld, you’ll need to use stainless filler, with TIG, and back-purge it with Argon. DMS has all the stuff to do it, but it isn’t easy. Thin walled stainless is where stuff gets fun in the welding world.

I’ll advise him…

He needs to be aware that it cant be galvanized.

Low current TiG on thin walled stainless, I mean real low. I recently did some 26ga at 16A to give you an idea.

Are mufflers sometimes galvanized?

Some are…as well as tube

My next question is – is it as readily identifiable as the trash cans are? Will the muffler (if galvanized) have that same look if we wash off a spot?

Yes it does. It will still have the white spot right after welding.
