Copying VHS to DVD (or whatever)

A member here (who doesn’t have a Talk account) was wanting to copy some VHS tapes to DVD or convert into MP3 files or whatever. Do we have that kind of equipment available here?

It will probably matter if they are personal (home videos) or commercial VHS.

I don’t think DMS has the things to do that but someone can easily purchase the required stuff today a few miles way for $20 (assuming the person has a VCR).

I’ve got rigs for this at home - a nice VHS player with TBC (time base code correction), two DVD recorders (one does dual-layer discs), and even a Betamax player. How much stuff is there to convert? And yes, to @Karl_Lockhart’s point, I tried converting some old VHS’s of New Kids On the Block for someone once and couldn’t do it. Maybe with more cracking I could have gotten it, but eventually gave up.

On technical or moral grounds?

(and I don’t mean legal when I say moral…hehe)

I’ll ask. Probably more than a few. He has 6-8 stored in a box on a shelf here at DMS right now, so…

Also…ha ha, you like New Kids on the Block! Ha Ha! Now if it was Kids in the Hall, THAT would make you cool.

The copy protection on some big studio tapes was pretty interesting back in the day. Looks great on the original but does weird stuff when copied. How does copy protection on a video tape work? | HowStuffWorks

Weak sync pulses will do that.

Get a sync cleaner that uses an LM1811.
