Chuck Graf and I were talking about the difficulties with the Fire Marshall, and he came up with a pretty good idea. He suggested that we might hire a Fire Safety Engineer, to work with and represent us with the Fire Marshall.
This provides several advantages:
Legally recognized subject matter expert. The opinion of a Safety Engineer trumps a Fire Marshall, and they know it.
Can represent us at the Fire Department - He can argue points without angering the Fire Folks.
Hiring him demonstrates committment
Cost, both in hiring, and fixing the things he identifies.
Best strategy I’ve seen so far.
