Compact low-cost smoke generator?

I would like to design a small 3d-printed model that will have a smoke effect come out of it, but dry ice doesn’t last long, and a fog machine is too large for a small 3D model. Any ideas?

Lionel model railroad smoke fluid makes small amounts of smoke from
Minimal heat. It is designed to be heated by the smoke pot in a model railroad engine . Not as much as a glycol/glycerine smoke machine rig ,but some visible smoke .

There are water vapor generators that you can pickup for a few bucks . they are generally used during Halloween so I assume food safe and they are also the primary working unit in some cheap humidifiers. [
