Please send a message if either of you will be around today. I will be at the “Space” working on a few projects.
I need to wind some new twine on the scratching posts for my cat’s treehouse, and can use an extra set of hands! I have not been thru formal “Space” training on this machine. Will not be doing any metal cutting. Just putting the posts between centers, setting the machine in back gear and winding the twine. Please let me know if you have any objections.
I won’t be there until around 7pm.
I wouldn’t be comfortable with that operation unless there is someone else in attendance and its running around 10 rpm. there will likely be someone there today.
Exactly…that’s why I was asking for extra hands. Probably best if someone could hand turn the spindle while I keep geed tension on the twine. I may be able to both myself, but would probably be easier with extra set of hands.
Is the post made of wood? If so and you are planning to hand-turn as indicated, you could consider the wood shop lathes for this as well, assuming length of post you have in mind is within their capacity (One-Way =~40"). Someone is usually around there that would be happy to help with something like this.
"Tis heavy cardboard tube with the twine wrapped around it. The twine is secured to the tube w/heavy staples.
Both ends of the tube have end-caps with tapped insert in the center. So, I can easily use the assy bolts to hold from both the head and tailstock ends. Pretty simple and straight forward. Maybe a .5 -1 hr job tops.
There’s not a problem doing this on the lathe - clean-up is a strict must. But one of our younger members, Ben, has used the lathe for winding wire onto tubes for coils. It worked out well allowing tight even coiling with multiple layers,. The lathe I believe goes down to 30 or 39 rpm which makes it easy to use.
