Class 3d Model Suggestions?

I will be teaching a class on 3d modeling in Blender and I’ve gotten the majority of the class prepared, but I’m trying to decide on what model I want to have people create to demonstrate various modeling techniques. Does anybody have suggestions on a relatively simple yet interesting object to build? An ideal model will be a hard surface object that has somewhat unique geometry (as opposed to being able to just group a bunch of primitives together). I’m hoping to have a few different ones of varying difficulty in mind and adapt to the class, as I’m not yet sure how advanced each attendee will be.

How about something like a 3-arm spinner, with a curvy perimeter and spherical’ish tips, but nice simple cylindrical bearings inside of it?

Perhaps tie in with other design classes and requirements at the space? Like a domino (HAAS)

For some reason, the idea of a spinner hadn’t even crossed my mind even though everybody is making them. I’m thinking I’ll draft one up and give the class a choice of that or something else (some people are sick of spinners by now).

Perhaps I could start with a domino since it’s super simple, then I can follow it up with something more complex. It would be a good model to demonstrate edge loops and subdivision surfacing on.

A fun exercise for me was using TinkerCAD to try and replicate the “die” piece, from scratch. i.e., merging a sphere and a cube (in the right order so the right bits get left over!), then doing circular “pits” on the faces before dropping in numbers.

Extra credit: include a hollow behind one face to stick a BB to make a loaded die…
