Charged while closed?

soooo… i was charged $75 but DMS is closed? Is the monthly fee still supposed to be charged? Just wondering what I should expect for my membership fee. I miss DMS!

Thanks Y’all!

All the dues are still processing, we still have bills to pay and we still offer services to members even with the closure such as:

  • Pro G Suite accounts
  • Online Classes
  • Adobe Creative Cloud apps to install at home (through May 31st)
  • Jump Server
  • etc

You can cancel and rejoin at any time, but many of us (myself included) are just riding it out.

They have set up 2 free months of skillshare, which is nice. Quite a few nice classes of various types there.

If we automatically put all member billing on pause, there would be no DMS to come back to. I appreciate those that continue to pay for the limited services we have. Also appreciate those that are having financial difficulty and need to cancel for now. We will see you on the other side of this.

Makerspace has a pretty big war-chest of funds, while many of us sadly do not

Any word on when it will reopen? Since many restaurants and stores are opening May 1st

and you can cancel and rejoin at any time; that warchest goes away pretty fast if we suddenly stopped all billing completely, given we have expenditures that happen regardless of any services provided (rent, insurance, etc), as well as the services we do provide (AWS hosting for things like this forum, the Jump server and other systems needing the electrical and network support, etc)

This is still TBD; we can’t enforce the occupancy requirements as part of that stipulation, and gyms and the like (which as far as the county concerns we’re probably closer to) are still going to be closed.

P.S: please try not to back-to-back post. If you have a quick addition you can Edit your existing reply.

What happens if a yearly membership is cancelled?

when you rejoin you’d either have to switch to monthly, or pay another year up front. If you’re already paid up for a year there isn’t a reason to cancel if you’re not at the end of your term.

If you have a legacy rate, it may not be granted back

Fun Fact- I’m not even IN Texas until October and I decided to keep my membership active anyway.

  1. I financially can.
  2. I see it as an investment in my own life.

If you CAN keep paying you are helping keep the doors open for when we will be able to come back.

And if you can’t? No shame there. We will be excited for you to return when you can.

I’ve been enjoying animation through SkillShare. I hope the board continues to make that a member benefit. For anyone who hasn’t taken a peek I suggest you give it a shot

So, how does one access SkillShare? Sounds like it would breakup the monotony of sheltering-in-place!

Barking Chicken has the instructions posted above me. You just put in the DMS code when you register and it applies the scholarship. No credit card required. After that just log in and follow along. Some classes are stand alone, others are a series with discussion boards.

I would also like it if skill share became a regular benefit! Especially since some people like me can’t always physically make it to the space, it would be nice to have some digital perks to being a DMS member

I’d like it if distance options for members only continued regardless, but I also don’t know what the board is paying for it

Well that would mean I would have to pay $60 instead of $50 from now on so that could mean 100s even 1000s of dollars more in the long term :frowning:

Sadly I can’t, but if I stop paying my membership fees will increase to $60 from $50, and that could mean 100s if not 1000s of dollars more over the long term :frowning: I wish they would allow me to come back at the $50 since I have been a member for years

It would take you 8.3 years to rack up 1k in that extra $10. If you stopped paying while closed for ~2 months you would save $100 (your current rate) that’s 10 months of the additional fee you worry about. In the long run it doesn’t save you money to keep the membership current in order to maintain the $50 rate.

Also consider that you could email the board and ask to get your rate back after the space opens back up.

Do you have their emails? Thanks
