Caught the blue filter on fire 12/15/2020 - Moved Topic

Text to meet the minimum requirements to move the topic to DMS General.

Jared was angle-grinding a piece of steel in the Metal Shop. Apparently some of the sparks from the grinding caught the blue filter on fire. It’s been put out. We’ve returned the fire extinguisher that was used to its original spot with a note on it.

@Team_Metal_Shop – do we have that extinguisher recharged? Or should we let Infrastructure know so that it’ll be recharged?

@Team_Metal_Shop Hey, I needed to make an account on talk to post, message me at [email protected] if you have questions or anything

Did the fire alarm go off?

Also please unplug the unit or turn it off.

Please move the fire extinguisher to the back door area by the laser table.

I didn’t hear it up front, and Jared didn’t mention it. He said that he unplugged it. Going to move the fire extinguisher now.

Thank you!

Would you please walk by the fire panel and see if it says anything about trouble?

The one by Digital Media says “All Systems Normal”.

Thank you!

I’ve received messages asking if we have more filters. Please leave the unit off and out of service until the committee can evaluate the situation -the switch takes a tag out lock.

So, just to make sure and be on the safe side, is the metal shop available for use or is it down until the blue filter is fixed?

I have some welding and some grinding that I wanted to do today but I’m not real sure what the status is because of the blue filter fire.

Thanks!

Go ahead & do your thing, Metal Shop isn’t closed. We are working on ascertaining/procuring different style filters for it. (Fire Retardant).

Awesome!
Thanks!

Yeah, if you’re the only welder, you can use the movable vent that’s on the wall. “Snuffleopagus”.

For those who wonder,
This is the snuffleopagus

The new motor has been procured and the unit will be put back into service in the near future.

After talking with the filter distributor, it was determined that we do not have a baffle in front of the unit and that was the primary factor. Before it goes into general service we’re going to weld one up. The filter isn’t designed for direct spark contact.

@dryad2b do you know of a general waiting pool of welding students / have anything scheduled? Under supervision I’d like to make it part of a class if we can. We should have all the material required, though I’m finalizing a design that works with the existing swing on the unit.

There’s two general ideas and whatever we use will depend primarily on material sourcing for one of them. The first is a typical angle iron / flats that form an indirect path to the filter, the second actually uses the kind of grate that you see on small kitchen vent hoods to mitigate fire igniting internal grease (@procterc 's idea IIRC. Really nifty but need to see if that grate is easily sourced in a way that’s easy to work with).

This can likely be made on a committee day or at the end of a class. For the general frame it should be good welding practice for either MIG or TIG.

So I took the welding class with her literally weeks before the shutdown last year. I’ve been wanting to weld something to relearn and practice what I was taught. I know someone else from my class that wanted to practice too. I wouldn’t mind helping if someone was there to supervise and check the work. Even if they were doing something else in the metal shop, just being there so I could call them over would be fine.

@rlisbona has been doing quite a few classes recently. This would be a great project for people to help with.

Post a drawing so I can understand what we are building and let me know when we will have the steel.

We could incorporate changing the metal shop bandsaw blade in the project, as is typical it sounded like it was missing teeth, wasn’t cutting straight vertically, and the vise wasn’t square when I tried to use it a few days ago.

I’ll try and get it up tonight or tomorrow afternoon; I got my schedule for something an hour ago and found I will not be able to make the Saturday meeting in person so I need to get a drawing for anyone that can do it then (or later) regardless
