Cardboard Boat Regatta

Who would be interested in coming in together to make a boat out of cardboard, then racing it?

That does sound like fun. What are the constraints? Like, how soon do we need to be ready to go?

the rules should be available through the link but here’s the TLDR

  • the boat can only be made using cardboard, but nonstructural ornamentation can be made of other materials
  • no sharp edges on the boat
  • To qualify as a finalist, participants must correctly navigate the race course around the
  • buoys (races are run in a U-shaped course) and all crew members must be in the boat as
  • it crosses the finish line
  • Boats with the fastest times in the time trials for that category will advance to the
  • semifinals. So technically, a boat could finish first in its time trial heat, but not advance to
  • the semifinals
  • Foul-play or non-sportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated and will result in immediate
  • disqualification.

and we should try to get ready by around late March, the entry deadline is April 1

So no waterproofing substances may be applied?

What kinds of glue are allowed?

“Cardboard” can vary quite a bit. The boxes used to deliver chicken and vegetables in bulk to restaurants were heavily treated to resist water, at least when I was a kid in the family business.

we can paint it with paint and polyurethane to seal it. Glue can be just elmers. the full rules are listed in the link above

No waxed or integrated waterproofing allowed on the cardboard. One part polyurethane or similar is allowed, but not two part systems like epoxy or resins.
