Can we underglaze the bottom of an item?

I know that we can’t glaze the bottom of our pieces, but can we underglaze them?

Yes you can. Please make sure to have a note with your piece when it’s placed on the firing shelves to tell the kiln team it’s underglaze on the bottom.

Some underglazes, like Amaco Jet black, stick, but doesn’t run at all

Thank you!

Here are some tips if you want to glaze the bottom of your piece. But, please make a note for the members that load the kiln.

The key to stretching any rule is understanding why the rule is there. With glazing and under glazing the bottom of ceramics, you need to make sure your piece will not stick to the shelf when fired. If you can do that without adding undue work to the members loading and firing the kiln, your good.
