Went to buy wood as a first timer and wanted some maple. I specifically asked for a hardwood and not a conifer/soft wood since I know we can’t use that with the machines. Was sold Western Red Cedar which after thinking about it I thought was a conifer. I searched it up and what I found said it was a hardwood. Just want to double check if it’s okay to use or not…
Unless it’s changed recently, I believe the rule is no Southern Yellow Pine, not: “no pines or conifers.”
Construction grade lumber like Southern Yellow Pine has a lot of sap that gums up the machines.
First the only woods that are banned in the woodshop are
1 southern Yellow pine or SYP - think Home Depot and construction lumber
2. Pressure treated lumber isn’t allowed in the space at all…
3. No reclaimed lumber
4. No pallet wood
Western red cedar is pretty soft. 320 on janky scale

You’re good to go ! Have fun making
What is allowed/banned also varies by machine as well.
For example: no engineered wood (mdf, plywood, etc) on the planer or jointer.
It can get confusing and hard to remember. Fortunately, there is a sign at each of the major machines that outlines what is not allowed. (The signs are a brilliant idea - wonder who thought to put them up?)
