Can I use the forge?

Hi, I’ve been to the blacksmithing class a few times now and I’m wondering if I can use the stuff on my own. Do I need to supply coal or propane? Will I get yelled at for touching stuff without explicit permission? Do I need additional instruction on how to run the forges before I do so unsupervised? I just need to make a few small parts and tools.

The committee chair is who you should ask, but I don’t know if he monitors the talk forum much. I believe I have heard that if you have taken the blacksmith class you may use the equipment, but you will need to supply your own fuel. And as always you will be expected to clean and store the equipment properly.

@jhaskins is the committee chair and can provide the best information.

In the distant past, you needed to tell John you wanted to use the forge on your own, and he would check you out on it. Don’t know if that’s still the requirement.

Just to confirm it should go without saying.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES TURN ON THE FORGE INSIDE

That is all, but you should talk to John.

I would hope it’s apparent that operating a coal-fired device indoors is a Bad Plan™…

Gas or Coal is a bad plan.

Hi Bradley,

I’m sorry I’m not putting a face with your name, but I’m glad you have
attended a few of our classes.

If either John Haskins or myself have signed off (figurative, not
literally) on using the forges and storage of the blacksmithing tools, you
are more than welcome to use them at any time. If you haven’t been so
instructed, please hold off until you are shown. You can contact either
myself or John directly and we’ll try to set up a time with you if you want
to use the equipment before the next class.

Look forward to seeing what you make!

Sarah

Thanks, Sarah. How can I contact you or John directly? I can’t find a way to message you on here.

That’s a good question. I never have figured the whole, or even part of
the “talk” thingy out. I THINK you can reach John by clicking @jhaskins or
the blue @jhaskins shown in one of the previous posts. No idea how you
would reach me via this thing. Maybe @Sarah ?

If you click the user name on a thread, it brings up the following dialog box

You can then click the blue Message button to send a private message to the person.
