Bridgeport CNC, Lathe, and Haas

Machine shop team,

I have previous experience using newer Bridgeport CNC and lathes. I’d like to eventually get trained on Haas making custom folding knife scales.

Who can I work with to get trained/certified. I’ve reviewed all the online info and feel comfortable with using the equipment and programming my own tool paths. Just need software for Haas.

Also is Titanium allowed in the machine shop area?

Not sure if anyone pointed you in the correct direction, but… I am copying the right group on this. @Team_Machine_Shop

I’m not sure how the lathe and manual mill certifications are being handled during the COVID stuff, but I believe there are still certifications occurring.

We are extremely protective of the HAAS, rightfully so, in my opinion. You’ll need to take the classes, do the CAM work, submit your work, and request a sign-off test. The sign-off test isn’t merely to prove the prospective operator can do the design and run the tool…it is heavily reliant on how safely the candidate sets-up and runs the tool as well as their ability to think through the run.

Thanks,
Thomas

For the knee mills and lathes there are Self-Study materials. Last I recall they were being added to https://learn.dallasmakerspace.org
However I cannot recall if those were 100% completed; in the event they were not you can grab the materials from the Machine Shop wiki under their respective entries: https://dallasmakerspace.org/wiki/Category:Machine_Shop#Resources

With prior experience one should be able to complete this fairly easily, and then a machine-side sign off can be scheduled with an instructor such as myself, @BobKarnaugh, or @malcolmputer

Cheers,
